I need some advice for a 5.56 suppressor. I want to buy one suppressor that I can use for two different guns. I like the idea or the M4-2000 from Advanced Armament or the Phantom from YHM (I like YHM's prices better) with the QD which would be fine for my carbine. I also have one setup with a 20" bull barrel that I will be mounting it to. How would I go about making sure I can easily use the suppressor for both rifles. The target rifle would look stupid with a QD flash hider on the end of the bull barrel.

Other than just going straight thread mount, i dont see how you will get around the QD mount situation.
I have a M4-2000 with less than 300 rds through it on a F3 (only one tax) that Im looking to get rid of. Ill make you a good deal on it. I don't have the QD mount though, so you'd have to order one or 2 or 5 from AAC. They run about $75 each. PM me if youre interested.

The only solution I can see would be to thread the bull barrel the same as threads on the flash suppressor. I'm still checking on them right now, I may go with the YHM for the price.

The only way you get around the QD Flash hider is to use a thread mount can.

The only problem with that is not having a flash hider on the carbine when the can is not in use. I guess I really just need to buy two cans.

Why? Screw on a flash hider.

Why? Screw on a flash hider.
Its ok to hand tighten them? I thought they had to be tightened down with a lock nut?

If you want to index it properly it may need to tighten it down a bit, but I wouldn't. Put a washer behind it or something.

One option:
You could buy your can and mount the QD flash hider that comes with it on your carbine and buy a second QD mount for the bull barrel. Take the second mount to a smith and have him machine off the "bird cage" portion of the flash hider. All you need to mount the can is the rear third of the QD mount. Here's what I mean:
Standard YHM QD mount:

Have the smith modify your second mount to look like this:

Be sure to call the manufacturer and ensure that this would be suitable to do, though. I've never actually seen it done, just discussed it with some of my customers. YHM's QD mount for their Wraith 22 looks almost identical to the "modified" mount in the second pic.
I don't think a decent flash hider looks funny on a target rifle, but I do think the Advanced Armament/YHM Phantom with the large screw looks goofy.
I have the Gem-tech HVT. http://www.gem-tech.com/HVT.html It uses a bi-lock. I have used this on my AR. It is pretty good, but is large and heavy compared to 223 cans.
The G5 (http://www.gem-tech.com/G5.html) uses a bi-lock, but it looks like it only comes with flash suppressors. Maybe they would be fill in a flash suppressor for you.

The 3 prong blackout mount from AAC for the M4-2000 wouldnt look too bad on a precision rifle, no where near as goofy as a phantom.

I guess I could have somebody thread the bull barrel the same as the rear threads on the flash hider, but I would hate to do that and have a weird threading on the barrel. What sounds like the best idea is cutting off the cage on the flash hider and just use it as an adapter. That way I can have a normal 1/2 x 28 threading on the bull barrel in case I want to use a comp or something different later. Thanks for the suggestion MAJ.

The QD mounts are a standard thread. AAC phantom QD mounts are 1/2x28.

Thats what I meant. The threading is 1/2x28 so I could thread the bull barrel at 1/2x28. What I meant was the threads that the can screws on to at the back of the flash hider is an off threading and I wouldn't want to thread the bull barrel to that.
YHM also makes a QD adapter without the flash hider for .22 rifles to use the phantom on. The Phantom 7.62 will mount on the Phantom 5.56 flash hider and Wraith .22 QD mount. The Phantom 5.56 will mount on the Wraith .22 QD mount also. The Wraith .22 QD mount looks like the one Maj Malfunction photo shopped. They are built so you can't put the smaller cans on the larger QD flash hiders. I have both the Phantom 5.56 and 7.62 and use the different QD mounts for multiple of weapon platforms. They work great!
I hope this helps.
Brandon.

I will be doing this exact mod here in about 1 month. Just bought a YHM Phantom in .308 for my .300 Whisper, but also wanted to use it on my Rem700, but am not impressed with the look of the adapter on that particular rifle. Talked with my 'smith and he thinks no problem cutting it down and threading it up on the .308, and he will make me a thread protector to cover it when taking the adapter off. I'll try to post pics when it happens.

I started the paperwork for an AAC Omni. It mounts right over the standard flash hider so I can swap it between guns with out having to buy a bunch of ape**** mounts.

Thread the bull barrel and then just get a knurled thread protector the same diameter of the bull barrel to screw down over the threads when the suppressor is not in use. That's what I've got on my 10/22 and 77/22.
I have a Knights Arm. supressor that uses the QD system, just put their flash hider on and your good to go!!!

Don't forget to swap out all the crush washers for peel washers.
