What makes the M-4 feed ramps better than standard? And what exactly is the diffrence between "M-4" and "regular" feed ramps?
Thanks.

These longer, steeper feedramps were designed because of a problem discovered in the M4 during full-auto use. With its short, harder cycling gas system in full auto, it would feed the rounds into the chamber faster than the magazine would be capable of feeding. Because of this, it would sometimes cause the round to miss the feedramp.
It is also speculated that follower design could have played a role in this as well. With followers that are capable of tilting, the slightest tilt in the follower in high rate of fire, it only increases the chances of a malfunction. Instead of looking at follower design, Colt chose to simply extend the ramps and that fixed the problem.
Magpul followers or H&K magazines fix the "problem", or decrease it’s frequency without need of the M4 feedramps.
There’s no downside to having them, but they are not necessary without full auto and when using followers that will not tilt, or in a 20" rifle.

Mainly, people get them in their semi-auto carbines, to get the closest replica to a true M4 as possible (without the select fire, of course). And it costs more, typically.
They don't have a benefit in a semi-auto rifle.

CMT uppers with M4 cut ramps can be obtained for the same price as A3 uppers (both mil-spec). I wouldn't spend over $100 shipped for one NIB. Most barrel manufacturers don't charge extra for M4 barrel extension either.

Thanks all. I was wondering the same thing. One less thing to fret about for a semi only shooter.

Wrong....they do have a benefit in a semi-auto rifle. They enhance feeding reliability.
I used to think the same way until I encountered first hand many rifles that would not feed reliable without them. I have since fixed them by cutting the ramps that should have been there to begin with.
