What's the turn around time for something like that?
I was thinking about Duracoating it myself to save some dough, but I'm not so sure how well it will hold up to frequent use. I have a rifle I refinished with Duracoat but it sits in the safe.

It depends on how backed up they are. The tGO1 comes standard with the Roguard and I order the RRA with the Black T, so I don't know for sure. I have heard 90 days or so.

I bought my first 1911 last week, a Springfield Champion. It's used but new to me. I will probably be refinishing it soon, any suggestions?

Depends on how much you want to spend and what kind of finish you're looking for.

Hard Chrome, Ionbond, or Melonite are the best treatments out there in terms of wear. They are expensive though.

Black T is "OK" IMHO but notably one of the softer finishes and overpriced considering you can find someone to Cerakote a gun for around $150. FWIW I've owned guns with both types of finishes.

Robar's NP3 is also an excellent option, not to be confused with Roguard.

Don't mistake Black-T for the other "baked on" finishes. There is a reason why the other finishes cost less. They simply don't do the same thing. Even when you get some wear on the high points, Black-T is still protecting the metal. It is actually impregnated into the metal during the refinishing process. Black-T is guaranteed for life. It's very slick - to the point your gun will be self-lubricating. It's easy to clean a gun that's finished in Black-T (basically you wipe your gun clean with a cloth).

My other choice would be Robar's NP3. It does everything that Black-T does, except that it's a dull gray color.

bac1023
11-16-2008, 13:25
I will echo what others say about NP3. Its also an outstanding finish. I was only listing the black finishes, but NP3 is what is on the frame of the TGO. Roguard is on the slide. Its a two tone Robar finish and the best finished 1911 I own.

Thanks for the info guys. I definitely want a black finish so the np3 is out. I'll have to contact some of these places to find out some pricing and turnaround times. I also need to factor in price to ship it there and back, I think it has to be over nighted both ways which ain't cheap.

Yeah, I figured you wanted black.

Good choice for a carry gun.

The Springfield Custom Shop will refinish your 1911 in Black-T (not to be confused with their Armory Kote, which is a totally different finish). According to their price/spec sheet, the cost to refinish the entire gun in Black-T is $195. Click on the link below and then click on the box for "1911-A1 Custom Worksheet".

They are Larry Davidson's Barbed Wire grips.
I normally prefer his Horned Lizard grips. I found these
listed on a 1911 froum site. Bought them as quickly as I could.

Top pistol is a 1991 Colt .38 Super/9mm Conversion pistol that I have some work into.

The center gun is a Kimber in .45; the only Kimber parts that remain are the frame, slide and barrel.

The third gun is a Ti Caspian frame with .38 Super/9mm barrels that I built.

Wow,.....
That IS a major compliment, thanks.

Work was accomplished at Mr. Richard Heinie's shop.
30 lines-per-inch, frontstrap, trigger guard and mainsprinbg housing are
all perfect, not a flaw to be found.

I have wanted a Heinie Colt Commander for some time.
I grew up within 35 miles of his shop, a small town Guy, truly an amazing individual!

Probably not. I have seen pics of this particular pistol (by previous owner) with two other sets of grips; these are the most appealing IMO of those I've seen on it though. I haven't a clue what the wood species is, but they are stunning in person, taking on whatever predominate color is surrounding it.

Durocoat, McCormick Non-gunsmithing rear sight, Para hammer, Wilson Combat internals, Wolff Springs, OEM frame, slide and barrel, STI grip saftey, it's a deeper black than my crap picture shows

Haven't looked for Pachmeyers yet, maybe at the upcoming Ft Worth show...

Very nice!

How does it shoot?

I just picked up a LNIB Norinco Deluxe, that has factory wood grips.

I did not have a chance to shoot it yet, but it appears to be a very solid, well built 1911.

Norincos are definitely very well built 1911s, srothman. It will be the next, and probably last, production 1911 I buy.

Congrats on yours.

Which Duracoat black did you use?

Which Duracoat black did you use?

I used the matt black...this one

http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=756251

was really easy..considering i Third World engineered it...

made a drying box out of plywood, with a heatlamp inside. used a $15 airbrush from Hobby Lobby, with two cans of compressed air. This was in 2006 and it's held up great. I did muck up the first run...used thinner to remove without curing...reprepped and dryed off..and then reapplied. 2nd time was the charm. The parts are a mix of blued, stainless from various sources (STI, Wilson, OEM, Smith/Alexander) and I just wanted a uniform finish. the grips are off Ebay, I think they are Kimber, and still not sold on them. May go with a nice walnut or Pachmyers when the show comes to Fort Worth in 2 weeks. Not an exact replica of the MEU/SOC, but then I'll never be able to afford the Kimber version!

Shoots point of aim. was a little to the right, so I just used a wood block and tap a lil, shoot, tap shoot a lil....and it's dead on now at 25 yards with the Novak front dovetailed in the front. Groups can run 2" easy, and a past friend that was a Master Limited got them under 1.5" with no flyers from a rest. I always have fliers....:crying:

shoot mostly ball, 230 grain Poly and FMJ, but will feed 200 gr semi-wad (shot that almost exclusivly when this was my Limited 10 piece) and 230 grain Hydrashocks.

I love this gun. I'll never get rid of it. I just hope to afford a 9mm 1911 to pair up with it

No disrespect taken. Yours looks great too. Mine isn't an exact copy of the MEU/SOC pistol either. I liked the idea that the Marine Corps picked parts to make a good compromise between basic and user friendly, without compromising the combat toughness of the pistol.

I used a craft store airbrush to apply the Norrells Moly Resin on mine and a toaster oven to bake the parts.

What kind of sights are those?

What kind of sights are those?

McCormick was selling them before they got out of the .45 parts. I have an extra in the bag i'm saving for the next build. They were around $50 from Brownells. The front is dovetailed in, a Novack Front blank that I cut to the profile i wanted after my gunsmith dovetailed the slide. He also beadblasted all the parts, stainless and blued, to prep for finish. I'm astounded by the uniformity of the finish, regardless if the part was blued or stainless. The mag release is a slightly extended version in blue that matches perfectly that McCormick used to sell.

I found these on the 1911 forums, and a poster said they are like the ones McCormick used to sell. Just drop in the factory sight dovetail and tighten. Be sure to sight in first before hard tightening...they won't come off!

Ya...thanks...I just can't get used to the looks of that rail! Ugly to meas well! I like the clean looks...which is why I am seriously saving my pennies for that DW Valor...one of the cleanest looking 1911's I have seen in a long time!

Me either...really...it's my only complaint with the TRP's...oh well...like I said...I will have to get me a Valor to satisfy my "pure and simple" affections in a 1911...I love how the Valor's slide is devoid of ANY writing other than the small little script, "Valor"...that is just so sweet!

Hey didn't they pass a new law banning handguns in Australia?

Umm no, hence photo.

In 2003 they introduced new restrictions regarding pistols ie; limit to 10rd magazine capacity, barrel length must be greater than 100mm for revolver and 120mm for autos and restrict licence's for cal greater than .38 in pistols.

I get so much email/pm about these grips. The mag button cut is something not a lot of folks is accustom to seeing, and they are not commonly offered in grips.

You just have to know what you want and to ask to have it done. I have done them to my other grips with a little more aggressive cut ( I have small hands ).

Well, I'm "Down To" having only SIX 1911's...the one I'm posting pics of here is probably my "Most Interesting"...and, in case anyone wonders, NO, my LAST NAME is NOT "Plaxco"...Hope you ENJOY....

A couple years ago, I was forunate enough to be able to purchase a Richard Heinie-built Colt Series '70...the gun has an INTERESTING history, and was featured in at least one article in "American Handgunner" Magazine...I'll let the PICTURES tell the STORY...

Yep, thats the one. The only two 1911s I own at the moment. I love the way it looks too, but am not sure about the grips. I use those to remedy the smooth front-strap, but feel like it doesn't mesh aesthetically. It feels great in the hand though.

It's not exactly traditional GI aesthetics anyway though, since it is SS and I had the ejection port lowered and flared. I was thinking about getting a skeletonized hammer. I'm gonna leave the grip safety though, as I really like the GI GS...

Despite having just got the Baer, I'm gonna start saving my pennies for a Wilson. If everything goes well I could maybe swing a CQB by Oct-Nov...

Actually after stewing on it for a bit, I'm thinking that I will get myself a CQB in December as a Graduation present to myself for getting my Diploma. That way I have a bulletbroof excuse with the wife unit. I mean seriously, how can she make me feel guilty for celebrating my graduation... :whistling:

Yeah, well I kinda started over in my late 20's. So I didn't get one the first time around when I was younger. I'll make up for that this time though...

Just gotta save and keep it together waiting for December... :impatient:

Yup! I actually sold that one a while back. Kept the grips though! Might put them on my Rock River.

Which Rock River?

I've got the top of the line Limited Match and its one of the best 1911s ever built, in my opinion. Too bad they aren't building them anymore.

They're nearly impossible to find used.

Nice pistol! I have a 5" pro carry. I agree that they are very nice pistols. I do not have the experience that you do, but I have tried most of the semi custom makers. My favorite would have to be Ed Brown. To me they are the smoothest shooting.

Thanks.

The Pro Carry is nice as well.

I actually prefer Rock River over Ed Brown.

I've got the Classic Custom, which is Brown's top 1911, but the Rock River Limited Match shoots better for me.

That said, the Classic Custom is a great 1911 as well.

My one and only 1911... for some reason every time I buy one I sell it, make a few bucks and move up in the expense ladder after a few months. I think its a sickness
