Just heard on the news that an off-duty IMPD officer just shot himself in the foot! Seems he was reaching for his keys and and dischaged a personal weapon in his pocket. :whistling:

There was a cop (I forget if he was MCSD or IPD) at my high school who shot himself in the leg my senior year. He said he was "adjusting his belt". He lived, but it was pretty bad as it hit his femoral artery.

I saw that on the news as well. Getting keys and discharged his pocket gun into his foot. Hopefully he is okay. I wonder what happens to him from a professional standpoint (other than ribbing by his peers) and what he had in his pocket. G26, J-frame, what sort of trigger?

Just so it wasn't a game of pocket billiards.

An off-duty police officer shot himself in the foot at a Westside auto parts store Wednesday.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Thomas D Weida, 40, suffered a bullet wound to his right foot when his .45-caliber handgun accidentally discharged at the W I Motor Supply store, 4250 W. Morris St., at 3:15 p.m., according to a police report.
The gun was Weida's personal firearm and not department issue, police said. He was carrying it in his front pocket when it fired.
"When he reached in to his pocket to pull out his key ring it became entangled in the trigger of the pistol and it discharged," Sgt. Paul Thompson said in a written statement.
Weida was taken to Methodist Hospital in good condition, Thompson said.
No one else was injured.
Weida, a nine-year veteran, is assigned to the department's traffic section.

I'm glad he wasn't seriously hurt, but that was blatant stupidity. Putting his keys in the same pocket as a firearm w/ an unprotected trigger, is begging for an accident.

.45 huh? I'm surprised it didn't blow his entire foot off, although I did notice a weather change yesterday.. ;)

Here's hopes for a speedy recovery for the officer.

How many times do I tell you people: DO NOT CARRY PISTOLS IN YOUR POCKETS!!!

Do not listen to the Gun Shoppe Commandos who tell us it's "all you need." Carrying pistols in your pockets is unsafe and slow to action.

Pistols belong in good holsters supported by good belts (no, not the belt you bought at Old Navy in Circle Center Mall, Jared and Seth). Put your pistol in said good holster, not in your pocket.

Carry on, that is all.

May I carry my secondary pistol in my pocket, Mr. Kirk?? :tongueout:

Oddly enough, I was talking to someone at the range last weekend about the importance of a holster if you're going to pocket carry.

I pocket carry daily, but always use a pocket specific holster (using a DeSantis Nemesis right now, but have a Bob Mika's holster on the way). I also don't carry anything in they pocket other than the gun. It is only my primary firearm when I cannot carry anything bigger. When I can, it is my BUG.

I find it easier to carry in a Fobus ankle holster. Very comfortable.

Was gonna axe about ankle carry, that's where the 3rd one goes when I carry 3....

Seriously, I really like ankle carry when driving, very easy for me to access.

I can carry three or more real gun IWB without problems.

:D

Ankle carry is not a great option for me. Pocket carry is okay, except big pants = big pockets, so sometimes it's a "search and rescue" even though the only thing in there is a snubbie in a Desantis pocket holster.

Actually in my LEO daze, I used to ankle carry a Smith J frame (M638) in addition to my Glock 23. I'm still against pocket carry.

North Central High School. It was in '99 or 2000. It made it on the news.

Are you talking about the contract security guy who was manning one of the checkpoints where traffic came onto campus?

He was playing around with his service pistol while seated behind the wheel in his car. He slipped up and had an AD, driving a Federal 115-grain 9BP jhp into his thigh. Punched through his femoral artery and the blood was coming out like a 3/8ths-inch garden hose. All I could see was red when I first looked in the car, but then I finally made out his face and dragged him out onto the ground. Luckily, between getting direct pressure on the artery, and (as you know) the paramedics being at the Washington Twp fire station there, he didn't bleed out enough to die.

Firearms are dangerous tools.

Which is why they deserve the utmost respect.

Indeed...and what hurts is when one of us has an AD it makes the rest of us look bad in front of the non-gun public.

Ditto on all of that basically... I use a desantis nemesis as well, don't put anything else in that pocket... try to have it as my BUG, although sometimes I'm too lazy to throw on my paddle holster and just walk out with the 642 in pocket holster.

Pocket carry is a great way to carry... IF you use some common sense and pay attention. What kinda doof tries to fit his keys in the same pocket as his carry gun... seriously how much room was there in his pocket for keys carrying a .45 in there... unless he was pretending to have keys in there so he didn't called out for fondling his piece in public

Maybe he has cargo pants. According to television, you can fit a whole twelve-pack of Mountain Dew in one of those pockets.

I've heard of those! "assault cargo pants".. I thought they passed a law about those things years ago... don't they require a permit? ;)
