Any of you guys have one of these babies yet? My buddy got one a month or so ago, but I have not gotten a chance to shoot it yet. He got the Ruger 17/77 or whatever it is called. It is a very sweet rifle and he says it shoots super nice! He is getting 1/4 - 1/2 groups (5 shot) at 50 yards!

This is the new Honrandy round based on a necked down 22 Mag. The ammo is a 17 cal, 17 gr balistic tip buller!

Very cool....

Seems like a neat little cartridge (Cabela's has a review on it).

But the ammo is as spendy as .223:(

Cheapest I saw was $6.95 for 50. Not cheap.. but shoots better in the wind that 223 did.. at least thats what he said!

Less drift.. maybe cuz it is so tiny?

I've been sharing time with a friend's for the last two months. It's accurate and kills well but so does the .22 mag which is much more widely distributed. It doesn't offer anything really substantial over the .22 mag and the ammo is more expensive. In my opinion it will eventually go the way of the Rem. 5mm of 30 years ago.

I've been wonder if it will make quick clean kills on the likes of groundhogs or coyotes? It's only 17 grains. What is the verdict?

The .17 RF seems like a solution to a non-existant problem. Some of the .17 cal cartridges are pretty neat, but for my money I'd get a centerfire. I like the option of reloading. Especially since finding factory ammo could be probablimatic. If they ever drop this ammo, due to bad sales, anyone who bought a gun will not be able to find anything to shoot through it.

You could get a .17 Mack IV, or a .17 Ackley Hornet. Both give better performance than teh .17 RF and you can reload them.

It is a lot faster than a 22 mag.. drifts WAY less... shoots WAY more accurate... and cost only $1 or so more per box of 50. It is not too badly priced. For a rimefire, this thing seems hot. He also has 223's, 22-250, 25-06, and 264 wim mag... he likes to varmint hunt... and shoot prairie dogs.

He said at up to 200 yards, it will perform on prairie dogs, just as good as the bigger stuff. In heavy winds, it outperformed his 223 (the only "big" gun he had along on tis particular day). The 223 was grouping like 2 inches in the heavy wind and the 17 rimfire was holding under an inch. This at 100 yards.

I think I will try one, IF Savage or Ruger ever makes it in a Lefty!

I like the looks of the Ruger best, but the Savage sounds like it is even more accurate. I wonder if Magnum Research will be making a bbl for the ruger 10/17 Rimfire, like they do for the mag? That might be a neat gun, cept it would not shoot nearly as accurate as a bolt of course.

Jon G23,

Sounds like your friend's yanking your chain or making up fairy tales. Best to buy one and find out for yourself. Although it's nice to see something different for the rimfire class it's not really that big a deal in real world conditions. Looks as if it would kill like lightening just sitting still but looks don't make performance.

Still waiting on mine,a Marlin 17VSS...Shot a friend of mine's 17VSS with a Leupold Vari-X 2-7x28mm,at 150 yards 5 shot 1/2" groups from a sandbag rest all day long.Wouldn't even try too take out a coyote with it,I doubt it will do the job in a humane way.
Whatever you do go with the Marlin with the heavy stainless barrel,it shoots better, looks better and is about $75.00 cheaper the the Ruger model.
Mine should be here at the first of the month, can't wait, they are a blast to fire and VERY accurate.

I believe you. My friend is a NON_CHAIN YANKER and if he tells me something, I buy it. I've been shooting with him for 25 years or so. My Dad and Uncle shot his Ruger and they agreed... it is an awesome round and shots fantastic.

My friend also said he heard the savage is a little more accurate, but he liked the look of the Ruger. I know Savage makes Left Handed 22's.. I HOPE they make this baby in a LH.. I'll take one!

I also agree, a 17 gr bullet is not a Coyote gun, but for ground hogs.. I am sure it'll do the job just fine up to 200 or so yards.

Sounds fun! Enjoy your SAvage and give us an update after you shoot it!

Within 2 to 5 years, I doubt that 17 Rimfire ammo will be available. The old 5mm Remmington round, at last count was at least $40 a box.
I would buy a centerfire 17, get the little LEE PRECISION program and down load the centerfire to, what is it?...2,000 fps.with the powder you would normally load a 4,000 fps round.

Hmmm, 5 shot 1/2" groups @ 150 yards all day long with a 2x7x28mm scope. I wish I lived closer to Texas. Got a $100 bill that says that ain't so.
