Where do you guys shoot at and are there any decent places to buy used guns around here?

I just moved out of Greenwood in Nov. Quiet place.
There is Bob's Gun Rack in Lee's Summit. He has just about one of everything. He is hit or miss sometimes on his price and his mood to nagotiate though.
There is American Firearms in Grandview. There selection of hand guns was small last time I was by there. Plenty of long guns.
Also try Denny's Guns in NKC off of 210. They will wheel and deal pretty good sometimes on used items.

Thanks for the info Joe!

I've been to Bob's Gun rack once. The guy was a bit testy. I was looking for a Winchester .22 rifle and he had two of them for almost $300 each. I found one 2 days later for $120.

I've been to Crossfire a few times to use their range, but I haven't tried to buy anything there.

I'll check out Denny's next weekend.

I normally shoot indoors at Crossfire.

I would also like to brag on a "Defensive Pistol" class I just took this past weekend. For thos of you in the KC area, it is well worth the 75.00 for 1.5 days of shooting/instruction including night shooting. It was just south of Ottawa KS.

Anyone in the KC area should try US Gun Specialties in Gladstone, MO. It is a great gun shop, people are really nice, and there prices are usually 20-50 cheaper than Show Me shooters, Bob's Gun rack, etc. Ammo prices are great too. they are carrying alot of reloading equiptment too. I think they are putting a shooting range in at the new store in Gladstone. Just a heads up, or a shameless plug, I bought a Smith 638 from them and it was 35 bucks cheaper than anyone in town..

I feel so inferior as I am only a regular Hans from Pittsburgh but I used to shoot IDPA.

Short Hans story. I was doing some work for a guy named Hans whose friend Hans was visiting from Germany. They invited me to join them for iced tea on the back porch so there were 3 Hans's hanging out at the same table.

Later, brother Hans :)

Excellent! I've driven by they often but never stopped.

Can non-members shoot for some sort of hourly fee?

Do you have to have your own target hangers or anything?

Any unreasonable rules, like no suppressors?

Is there an indoor portion?

Can't reconcile the 2 sets of hours of operations

handleydl
01-25-2009, 08:38
Non members can shoot at the trap range. You pay a fee for each round of trap.

The following applies to the trap range:
Hours of Operation:
Wednesday 5:00P - 10:00P
Friday 5:30P -10:00P
Sunday 12:00P - 5:00P

The following applies to the rifle / pistol range:
Open 7 days a week from 9:00 am to dusk.

The rifle / pistol range is physically separate from the trap range and for members only, no hourly fee but I believe they do block out periods of range time for youth clubs local police training and such.

Stationary target stands (celotex backer boards) are available at the yardages described for your targets. A couple movable stands are also available at the pistol range.

I'm not sure about a "no suppressors" rule. Complete rules can be found here:
http://www.llsconline.org/
Click the JOIN tab for details.
This web site is far from complete so don't expect everything to work.

No indoor range but they do have a full function club house at the trap range. It is used for there monthly meeting, CCW classes, and it can be rented for private meetings or parties.

The first number 816-578-4897 is the trap house.
It might be best to call Don Sears (one the directors) 816-719-4384 for a tour of all of the facilities. Don also teaches CCW at a very reasonable price.

I mostly shoot pistols on week days and it's rare to see anyone there. I've never seen a crowded weekend. I believe you are allowed one guest at the rifle / pistol range. You must sign in once you've entered the gate.

Hope this helps to clarify.

Too bad no steel silhouette - I suppose that is passe these days. It was good exercise walking from the firing line down 100 yards and back all day.

it will be good to get away from some of the idiots at the indoor ranges. It has been 20 years since I was a member of a private range.

Here from Lee's Summit. Purchased my first Glock (G19) about three months ago and have enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I have always used 1911's and couldn't understand why anyone would want a Glock. Boy, was I wrong. My wife and I usually shoot at Cross Fire at least once a week.
Then, I assume you are spending at least $20/week on range fees.

You may want to join the Lake Lotawana Sportsmen's Club - outdoor range for rifle, another for pistol, and there is a shotgun range. You pay an annual membership fee and no fees for range visits.

If you join in March and pay $40 (March-June) plus the $120 for (July-June 2010) they waive the initiation fee.

i just joined up for $160 through June 2010. (That is 8 week of your Crossfire range fees).

Yeah - I held the Barret Friday. John was offering me the scope, priced at more than the rifle I bought. Ooof! Must have weighed twice what my M-60 weighed (Army days, not personal property).

I bought the cursed RRA LAR-8 Varmint (.308) that was ordered back when it was Denny's. Then the guy who ordered it hadn't called back in a couple of weeks, and I was #2 on the waiting list.

'tis a heavy rifle. Good thing it will be for bench and bipod shooting. I probably should have waitied for that 700 5R in .308 but it sure is a nice piece...

The trap house is not open Saturdays. They will be open starting noon Sunday.

The rifle and psitol range are still shut down for renovation. The plans just got the OK from the nRA and need approval by the county before they can do construction.

They closed down a week or 2 after I joined last year, darn it.

I have volunteered to uodate their web site since the main contact died last fall, but..........

I've hosted 3 private indoor sessions at Crossfire (in Independence) and have mentioned it here before, but didnt get any GT members to show up. We have alot of KC people posting but not much organized yet. For those in the KC area, stop by the Missouri Hometown Forum on AR15.com. We have many organized events, such as Movie nights (with and w/out the wives/GF's), Dinners (BuffWWings, etc), and private shooting events at CrossfireIndoor Range. Yesterday, one of the local members in NKC, hosted a shooting event at his house w/about 35-40 people showing up. It's always nice meeting new people, much less getting to shoot outdoors with out the "3 sec rules", etc....

ok so I went to Lotawana today, yes the trap range is open Sunday and they showed me the plans for the rifle and pistol range but everyone shruged there shoulders when I asked when the project would be complete. They are waiting for the NRA to approve the plans but no one knows when this will happen. I took a walk down the trail to look at the range and it looks like it hasnt been used in years, they have a lot of work to do there . Grass and weeks are over grown everywhere. The pistol range is under a metal roof that looks like its for around 10 people to stand and shoot. The rifle range is the same , there is 10 concrete benches for shoot out to 100 yrds. There is a small section to shoot archery as well .

Just a heads up Bullet Hole has a couple social retards working there but for the most part they are good people. Also if your target hanger is loose just ask them to tighten it(had to do this several times) range rules suck, no fast fire even if it is controled but look up at their ceiling and you will understand why.

@Blue- one word "fantastic". I'm a newbie with shooting (and carrying CHL) so I learned a ton. Bill taught the class at a great pace, with plenty of hands on instruction and time with our guns/kits. Bill didn't shy away from showing us what he wanted us to do - he is a great shot and great instructor.

Going to take the Basic class with him or his wife next month, the CHL class this weekend, and another tactics class in March. He is that good.

scottMO

How was the conceal carry tactics class?

I took his Basic Combat class July 2004 at Pigeon Hill in St. Joe. Great class!

I took his CC tactics class in early Jan/2011 in the Caves on 23rd st, and loved it. We shot from his vehicle through the drivers side window (carjacking scenario) at a target. Learned several tactics for drawing onehanded while maneuvering the spouse/girlfriend to safety w/the other hand, 180 deg turns while drawing, etc.

I took the Advance Lowlight Carbine 2 weeks later (Caves) and it was outstanding as well. Ths one was a little higher speed as often the place was pitch black and you would come up on target, which was only lit by your weapons light. Not a beginners class for combat reloads and malfunctions in the dark, etc. A great chance to compare carbine tac lights side by side. My TLR-1 on my AR15 is barely acceptable for lighting up targets at 50 yards..

KCK by the Speedway. +1 on Bill Regina and his wife Dee. Great instructors and great people as well. I'm usually at the Bullethole on Thursday nights. Been to Parma Woods but was not impressed. The rules there are very strict and getting there is kind of a pain in the arse. Probably a great place to teach kids however because of the over-emphasis on safety.

There are no outdoor ranges within 40 miles of here. It's the one annoying thing about living in the best city in Kansas.

I belong to the Bullet Hole in Shawnee, so I could rent some different guns to decide which one I wanted (decided to go with the Glock 19). I have shot at the Para Woods in Waldron, MO. Nice outdoor range, but very strict on the rules, which I guess in the end isn't so bad.

Alan, is that you?
....shamelessly plugging your shop...
+1 for US GUN SPECIALTIES

Happy Rock, checking in.

Looks good to me! Here's a better link: http://ombrange.com/?dn=fullautoshoot.com&pid=1PO6J955Y I'm already driving over two hours to get there, so I'm open to other places. Looks like crappy weather all weekend, so inside would be good.

If you shoot a lot, Pioneer gun club is good.
They are choosy whom they let in and safety is #1, #2, and #3.

Since I have a key, I can go to the indoor range 24x7 and have the place to myself (unless there is an event). A little spooky when it is just you, the first time.

Pioneer is a bit closer to me I believe.. at least one of their ranges is.

That would be a bit odd going in at night like that. Not sure if the wife would be ok with me doing night shooting alone hahah.

I will look into them some more also but I think the membership was a bit out of my budget. Good info all. Thanks!

I dropped by pioneer g.c. today for their NRA Action Pistol practice and had a great time getting to meet some of the members. Very friendly group and I will be sure to come back again soon.

I like it.
On 4 July I went out early and shot 100yds, 200yds, and then some falling plates.
Got home before lunch and the heat rolled in.

Been MIA on this board for a while, SoCal transplant to a 2A friendlier state.
Can someone recommend any outdoor ranges in Johnson county or close by? I know I have OMB, Centerfire and Bullet Hole for indoor.
Also any sites, trainers, FB groups that do outdoor pistol/rifle classes?
