I will be attending the Indy500 in May. Are there any prohibitions on CCW at the race. I was searching Indiana law but couldn't find anything. I assume that it is legal for me to carry there. I don't know if the speedway has any signage or security ie; pat downs, metal detectors.

Does anyone have any first hand experience.

Thanks

You have to abide by any and all restrictions on your NC license. Barring any restrictions, the IC (IN Code) does not prohibit carrying at a sporting event/public gathering.

With 270,000 + spectators, not likely. Just keep it undercover and remember Indy can get hot in May.

Officially it is against the rules (not law). I have never been searched there (my person) but they do look in bags, coolers, etc. You would definitely not want to open carry!

Enjoy the race (and all the festivities surrounding the race).

I have never been to the Indy 500, but have carried at the USGP on several occasions. Just keep it concealed and don't draw any attention to it.

To be a Law Abiding Indy 1500 Guest please read read my opion...

Loaded weapons are not allow inside the Indy 1500!!!

If you bring any gun inside the building, make sure it is "UN-Loaded...

Show the Police Officers at the entrance table any gun that you bring into

the building and they will inspect the gun and place a bright colored Zip-Tie

through the barrel of your pistol or bolt on of a rifle.

Just keep any ammo out of what you bring into the show. You can always

cut the Zip-Tie and Rack your Glock as soon as you leave the

Show.

No, not INDY 1500, the gun show, INDY 500, the race.

i use to work general security at the track, no theres no searches, but be believed that the state troopers would be involved if you were seen with it. they wont ask you first they will go straight to the state troopers and have them apporach you to leave. keep it concealed and kep it well outta grabbing zone for stupid drunks and youll be fine

Thanks for the information. From what I am hearing I am going to carry concealed when I'm at the race. I can't wait for May.

If i'm not mistaken, the racetrack is in speedway, which prohibits concealed carry.

Correct me if I am wrong.

When is the last time someone was arrested and prosecuted for violating that Speedway ord?

While I am not disagreeing with you about the likelihood that the OP would be arrested for concealed carry, he should know that it is illegal.

To summarize my thoughts about this:
Is it likely that any given person could carry concealed undetected at the 500? - Yes
Is it likely that someone has been charged under this ord? - Yes, probably in an attempt to pile on charges in another crime.
Is it likely that someone has been arrested and charged for violating only this ord, with no other charges? - No
Should the illegality of concealed carry in speedway be considered? - Yes
Should a law abiding citizen / LTCH holder be concerned about arrest under this ord? - No
Have fun at the race! :wavey:

Wow its almost Indy 500 time again!? Time sure flies... Hopefully the race isn't 12 hours long again. That was one long, rainy, crappy day directing traffic. Heard the race was nice though...

The idea of willfully entering a confined space with more than a quarter of a million strangers gives me the willies. If something bad happens, you're at the mercy of the crowd, regardless of how well you're prepared to deal with all kinds of emergencies.

Indiana has laws that prohibit local regulations infringing on rights. Speedway has an ordinance anyway. You should know that.

As for getting in, they can do a cursory search. The most careful was the US Grand Prix a couple weeks after the 9/11 attack. Even then, I would categorize it as "a way to needlessly slow down lines while finding nothing and overlooking everything". On that day, the did look in coolers, etc., but they didn't really search anything well even at highest alert.

I hope you have fun!

I wouldn't worry. I wont say where, but friendly snipers are about...

I carried at the 2003 race with no problems. We walked n gate 1 and went to our seats in turn 1. They never even searched my cooler or camera bag.

Per a friend in the SPD, they will not hassle you about the ordinance in effect within the town. Unless of course you're being a dick, and then they may find a reason to ring you up.

There is also an ordinance about illegally launching anvils within town limits, but I have yet to see a write-up in the local paper about a drive-by anviling...

To echo the above, I have never been hassled by the police about either open carry or CC, but I bet if you were rung up on other charges and were CCing you would get that tacked on.

Don't forget pinball machines. They are a certified public nuisance (sp?).

When they first started searching, my son and I were filmed/on TV news. They showed his backpack (He was like 6 years old), being opened and searched. I can't find the video at the moment, though.
