View Full Version : Help-G36/38/39 Chrono data

I am in the process of looking for another Glock for concealed carry. I had a G-36 that I let get away for some long-lost reason, and I am considering replacing it with another 36, or a 38 or 39.
I know the 45 ACP suffers a significant velocity loss in shorter barrels, so I was hoping that the Glockophiles among you would be able to help. Has anyone chronographed loads through your 38/39? I am not looking for ACP +P velocities, just an idea of what loads actually do from real-world carry guns.
If you have chrono'ed loads through any other compact/subcompact Glocks I would be interested in the numbers too, including the 26/27/36.
Thanks for any responses.

Butch did a write up on 45 GAP vs. 45 ACP velocities. He compared the full sized Glock 21 against all 3 GAP models. He found that the G37 and G38 both held higher average speed than the Glock 21, and the G39 only a little less.

You could safely assume the Glock 36 is going to go slower than the Glock 21.

Unfortunately, that thread only takes me back to the home page, and I didn't get very far using the search feature. But then again, I am not the most technologically proficient individual in cyberspace either!
Russel, I've been watching this thread becuase I have no data to offer for I have no chrono. It's been a while since you asked the question and I do know that GAP and ACP are identical ballistically, you already know that I'm sure. I would then guess the GAP round probably acts the same from short barrels as the ACP does. Perhaps not quite as much becuase the pressures in the GAP are a tad higher. But that's getting into a level of ballistics that I rarely go in to. My concern of the speed of my bullet is less becuase at 7 to 10 feet, very little is going to drop in my GAP round. Wish we could be of more help though.

Chad - Thanks for the input. I basically agree with what you said, and that the GAP and ACP are essentially the same ballistically. Because of the slightly higher pressures with the GAP, I would expect a "slightly" higher velocity for the GAP, all else being equal(which it never is). But we are probably only talking 10 - 20 fps difference anyway, and there will be more velocity variation than that within a box of ammo.
So I quess that I will make my decision based on which feels the best. Darn, now I have to gather up my ammo and drive to the range just so I can rent a G36/38/39 to see which I like best. Well, I guess that some days are better than others!
Are you looking for a shooting gun, or a carry gun? Are you able to put the full frame G37 away? Meaning, do you have the body frame to do it?

Does anyone have a good link to the chrono data in post #2? Or for that matter, any chrono data comparing .45ACP and .45Gap using any common factory loads?
I am particularly interested in the Glock 38 vs. Glock 39 performance.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for finding the article. I just got finished reading it and it just blows my mind that bashers will still go on about the 45GAP.
The number one "there" that they bring out is the ,"well, what about the 45ACP+p rounds." Well, what about them. Yes they are faster than the standard 45ACP or 45GAP. But I really doubt anyone has shot a 230gr slug going mach2 out of a G39 size handgun and then want to do it again.
Like a poster said in the thread, if you need a 45ACP+p, then start carrying a rifle.

I agree that the +P argument is pretty weak. I don't get it, as if the extra 70 fps the +P gives is really going to make a difference.
