My brother installed a synthetic stock on his SKS. He can't figure out how to remove the handguard (Yeah, he's a schoolteacher, so that's not surprising.) If somebody could tell me how to tell my brother how to remove/replace the handguard (top piece), I'd certainly appreciate it.

Thanks for the link! Now I know why I like my AR! I'll have to do the job for my brother. He'd never have the patience!
this is from the Mfg.

WalterGA,
I went through this same thing not too long ago. Here's the thread from the Survivor SKS board:

I finally took it to a gunsmith. He said it's "tack welded" in place. He had to drill it out, replaced the pin and "tack welded" it back. Cost me $30.

Thanks for the replies. I personally don't think that an SKS is worth $30, but apparently my brother and I don't have the same tastes in firearms.
for $20 i got a new gas tube that had cooling fins on it
didn't want to mess with removing the old wood handguard.

Just buy a new gastube with the black synthetic handguard already installed. should be $20-$30, plus you hav ea spare. That is what I did when I couldn't get mine apart. THat way you can put the wood stock back on if you want to anyways..
