I have always seen where people take a specific rifle cartridge and put the bullet into the muzzle to detect if the barrel has been shot out. So anyway, I try this with a recently purchased M38 Mosin-nagant and the cartridge falls down to the neck!! I havent gotten the chance to fire this yet, or should I waste my time and ammo? Thanks

Does the muzzle look like it's been drilled out.
If it does, then it's been "counter bored" (I believe that's the term), the muzzle was bad, so it was bored out.
If that's the case your GTG

Yes. More than likely, the muzzle was worn from careless cleaning rod use. It is common for Mosins to be counter-bored, which is to ream the muzzle an inch or so. The place where the bullet actually loses contact with the bore is critical for accuracy, so the counter-bore just moves that place farther back.
A good check at this point is to shine a light into the throat, and look down the bore to see how the rifling looks. If it's good, then take it to the range. You'll most likely be pleased.

My M38 is counter bored and shoots fine. I think they counter bore them to make a bigger fireball.

That appears to be it. It has a "step" a bit back from the muzzle. I checked out the bore at the shop and it was a lot better than I was expecting. I "ll try her out, and a big thanks guys.
And heres even more info on this that someone helped me with.

From what I've heard it's fairly common to see M38s counter bored.
