Howdy yall. Is there anybody at all that has put aftermarket sights on a 642 or 638? Not the pd, just plain ol airweights. Is it possible? :dunno:

I' have not done it yet but this company http://www.tooltechgunsight.com/ will drill the front sight and insert a tritium tube for around $80.00 plus shipping.

Also Ashley Outdoors aka AO sights will remove the front sight and cut a dovetail slot. That way you can put in their big dot, standard dot or tritium sights. Tooltech does excellent work and I have used them in the past. If you are older and getting near or have reached the point of bifocals/reading glasses you will find the big dot an improvement. The big dot is a very fast sight to pickup visually

My old 649, when I had AO Express Sights (now XS Sight Systems) put on my G30, almost had them drilled and inserted, but I was low on cash.

I went with lasergrips. I know they're not fail-proof, but so far I'm satisfied.

Models

#105 = El Cheapo
#205 = Torture Device (Now Discontinued)
#305 = Comfy, But Some Say "Too Bulky"
#405 = "Boot Grip" Style

Comments

The discontinued 205 was, for most people, a real pain to shoot. This was because the back strap portion did not extend anywhere near high enough, which in turn left the skinny, bare frame sitting in the web of the hand of most people. I tried it, found it guilty, and would not want the 205 at any price.

The 105 appears from photos to share the same design defect, but I cannot say from experience.

The 305 is darn good for shoting but is perceived by many to be a tad on the large side for CCW. I've only shot it, never carried it, but it is smaller than many other grips (it's still a J-Frame).

The 405 is my favorite. It is as slim, or slimmer than, Uncle Mike's Boot Grip. It does not extend below the frame. It is a scoche longer front-to-back, particularly at the top of the back strap (which it covers with some high-tech sponge to soak up recoil). This also changes the grip angle a bit, making it noticeably steeper. The pad could also be extended a bit higher IMO, but I find the grip sufficiently comfortable on the 638/642 type J-Frame.

Where to Buy

Consistently low prices on Crimson Trace Laser Grips can be found here:
Shooters Resource http://www.shooters-resource.com/

This vendor is an authorized dealer with an excellent reputation for service, etc.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
