We're counting down to a test date for the .22 rimfire barrel length vs velocity "chop-the-barrel" test.

See this thread for more info: http://glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69156

Here's the current list of cartridges on-hand so far for the test:

Remington: Golden Bullet HP (WalMart bulk pack), .22 Target RN, Thunderbolt RN, Yellow Jacket TCHP, Viper TC solid, Subsonic HP, CBee Short RN. Trying to get some Cyclone, no luck so far.

CCI: Velocitor GDHP, Stinger Penta-Point HP, Mini-Mag HP, Blazer RN, CB Long RN, Quik-Shok MPB HP (loaded in CCI cases, so I put it in the CCI category).

Winchester/Olin: Dynapoint HP (bulk pack, K-Mart?), Super-X HP, Power Point HP, T22 Target RN, Wildcat RN, Western Super-X HP, Xpert HP (WalMart bulk pack).

Federal: Hi-Power HP, Classic HP, Lightning RN, Federal HP (WalMart bulk pack), .22 Hyper Velocity 31 grain HP (never heard of that one until I found some on a shelf, in a 50-round gray "Classic-style" box), American Eagle HP, CB Long (old stuff, red box).

I tried to get some Aguila 30 grain (?) HPs, but the only retailer who had it would only sell it by the brick (@ about $30!!!). They said the small boxes were not labeled properly for individual sale, and the powers-that-be said brick sales only. I passed. I'll try to find somebody to split a brick with me before the test, but I refuse to buy 500 rounds of ammo for a short test; I don't care HOW good it's supposed to be.

Anything major I've missed? I tried to get a representative sample of plinking-grade stuff, lots of hunting HPs, several low-powered quiet CB rounds, and a couple of target loads (a low priority for me). Most of the ammo is fresh, off-the-shelf, recently purchased; a few boxes are from my ammo locker, and may be out-of-production (or have older labels than current production), but it's all been stored carefully under ideal conditions (which is more than I can say for some sporting goods stores' ammo storage).

Last chance for input! Let me know what you think...

Got the Remington Cyclone HPs (kind of like Thunderbolts with a HP). Still working on the Aguila HPs. May add Federal UM-1 UltraMatch.

Do you have any subsonic ammo? Like the Aguila super extra subsonic, or maybe even the remington subsonic.

Just wanted to bump this to the top.. I am really looking forward to the test results.

It has become increasingly important to me as I have an NAA Black Widow on layaway and I want the best for my 2" (Does that sound dirty to anyone else or is it just me?);)

Update: Found some PMC stuff; Sidewinder and Zapper. Also picked up a box of CCI Mini-Mag solids (RN).

GlocksRock,
Got the Remington Subsonic on the list, along with several CB loads.

Texas_Preacher,
Sorry, I'm not cutting a rifle down to 2 inches; I don't like institutional food and roommates named "Bubba". 16.25" is as short as I'll go. I'm afraid you'll have to find 2" data somewhere else. I'll check some magazine articles I have, I'm pretty sure at least one of them discusses short-barrel handgun ballistics. In another thread here, one of the guys posted some charts from a mag article on .22 ammo; I think they included some short-barreled gun ballistics, too.

Maybe test number two should be a 16" T/C Contender, cut down in increments to a 1" barrel, for the handgun fans! I'll let someone else do that one, I don't want to hog all the attention...

Here's the new list, sorted by manufacturer:

Remington (8)
Golden Bullet HP (WalMart bulk pack),
.22 Target RN,
Thunderbolt RN,
Yellow Jacket TCHP,
Viper TC solid,
Subsonic HP,
CBee Short RN,
Cyclone HP

CCI (7)
Velocitor GDHP,
Stinger Penta-Point HP,
Mini-Mag HP,
Mini-Mag RN,
Blazer RN,
CB Long RN,
Quik-Shok MPB HP

Winchester/Olin (7)
Dynapoint HP (bulk pack, K-Mart),
Super-X HP,
Power Point HP,
T22 Target RN,
Wildcat RN,
Western Super-X HP,
Xpert HP (WalMart bulk pack)

Federal (9)
Hi-Power HP,
Classic HP,
Classic RN,
Lightning RN,
American Eagle HP,
UM-1 UltraMatch (tenative, to be donated),
CB long RN (old red-box stuff),
Federal HP (WalMart bulk pack),
.22 Hyper Velocity 31 grain HP (never heard of this one until recently)

PMC (3)
Zapper HP
Sidewinder RN
Scoremaster RN

I will update this list if any more are added. Currently 34 loads on the list.

UPDATE: Added PMC Scoremaster.

I'm thinking I'll have to limit each load to a single 5-shot chronographed string (plus a couple of fouling shots) at each barrel length to keep the overall time manageable. Even so, that's (GULP) 850 chrono'ed shots, plus foulers, plus barrel-cutting/trueing time. What have I gotten myself into???

Shucks, you only go around once in life...

No worries... But data collected with a longer barrel can still be used to evaluate the relative strengths of a given round, right? If you are shortening the barrel by an inch at a time, it should be pretty easy to exptrapolate the data I need for a 2" barrel... at least close enough for government work ;)

Give me a month or so and I'll do it. Just need to find some free time. I have a 10/22 registered as a short-barreled rifle. I've been meaning to do this for a while anyway. I'm more interested in seeing at what barrel length most ammo stays subsonic. Sounds better through a silencer that way.

Texas_Preacher...this should help, but it's from a 2.75'' barrel.

Added PMC Scoremaster to the list; several guys were ranting about how accurate it was, wanted to know the velocity, so I said sure, why not.

Still trying to get the Aguila 30 grain HPs.

Texas_Preacher,
Found an article showing the Remington High-Speed Hollowpoint clocked out of a two-inch barreled revolver at 917 FPS. Only thing I've run across, so far.

Due to an unexpected windfall (a consignment item which finally sold), I was able to pick up the Aguila Super Max 30 grain hollowpoints and 60 grain round-nose subsonics.

I have also dropped one Federal load from the test list, because I think it is a duplicate; the old box of Hi-Power HPs seems to be exactly the same as the current Classic HPs.

That leaves us with 35 loads to be tested, as follows:

Remington (8)
Golden Bullet HP (WalMart bulk pack),
.22 Target RN,
Thunderbolt RN,
Yellow Jacket TCHP,
Viper TC solid,
Subsonic HP,
CBee Short RN,
Cyclone HP

CCI (7)
Velocitor GDHP,
Stinger Penta-Point HP,
Mini-Mag HP,
Mini-Mag RN,
Blazer RN,
CB Long RN,
Quik-Shok MPB HP

Winchester/Olin (7)
Dynapoint HP (bulk pack, K-Mart),
Super-X HP,
Power Point HP,
T22 Target RN,
Wildcat RN,
Western Super-X HP,
Xpert HP (WalMart bulk pack)

Federal (8)
Classic HP,
Classic RN,
Lightning RN,
American Eagle HP,
UM-1 UltraMatch (tenative, to be donated),
CB long RN (old red-box stuff),
Federal HP (WalMart bulk pack),
.22 Hyper Velocity 31 grain HP (never heard of this one until recently)

PMC (3)
Zapper HP
Sidewinder RN
Scoremaster RN

Aguila (2)
22 Super Maximum (30 grain JHP)
22 Sniper SubSonic (60 grain RN)

All I have to do now is get the guy who's going to donate the Federal UM1 UltraMatch to cough them up, and we're on the way!
