I have some good friends planning a trip to Fla. and will be driving on Alligator Alley. This reason I'm asking is I've heard that a lot of undesirables travel that road and want to get some feedback from those who know. He's not going to have any firearms with him. ( I'm still working on that one) So is there a high risk factor? At least one direction will be after dark. I'd appreciate any info, as they are headed that way this coming Saturday.
I lived right next to it for about 12 years. Haven't really heard of anything in particular. To me it seems like the loneliest road in existence other than roads in the desert. It's so boring and lonely that when I was little, I used to count how many alligators I could spot while my parents drove down it. I once counted 200 or so in just a 30 minute drive.
I make that miserable, boring trip several times a month and have never encountered a problem on Alligator Alley. The only thing to be careful of are crazy drivers who drive faster than they can handle a car and the usual drivers in FL who think the left lane is reserved for AARP members who can drive less than the speed limit.

Ok, thanks guys. It doesn't sound as infamous as I was led to believe. I'm sure you would heard about it if it was high crime area.

I think you'll have more problems with idiot drivers that two-legged predators.

Alligator Alley aka I-75?? Just watch your speed through the Miccosukee Indian Reservation...
jus fillup and go.
the only stop for gas is at the exit to Indian country. Most of the BIg rest stops ( only one now that I think of it ) has a wackenhut security guard. The others regulary have sg or FHP stopping thru it.
Numerous call boxes exists between the west-side and east-side in case you break down.
The #1 problems on the alley is not crime but; smoke, fog, drivers thinking it's posted at 100mph, a few gators trying to run across it ( alley ), etc......
use your brain and you should be okay ;)
