This happens quite often on Texas country roads at night. It can be deadly. Mabuti hindi tao. Sayang ang Bmer.

Lagsao (deer) . Whitetail species. The bottom pic shows the hind legs and buttocks are busted during impact. Theres an estimated 4 -5 million deers in Texas alone. Hanep. Texas land area almost the size of RP archipelago if in one landmass.

Same here in Canada. During the rut, a lot of deer can be seen crossing the road. And the results can be disastrous.

BTW, venison is good meat. The taste is a little gamey, but fat is virtually non-existent.

A friend of a friend has two carcasses hanging inside his garage (his chest freezer is quite full). We get a portion whenever we want to. He also sends some meat to a Filipino who makes sausages and deer pepperoni. I'm making tapa out of the meat he gave me.

I'm planning to hunt during the fall. One good sized deer could last a long time. As Brawnless has said, big savings on $$$.

Me and my buddy got one each last Dec. ,Yes deer taste are very gamey, but if you marinate venison in vinegar and ginger roots for at least 24 hrs, after washing it with at lot of salt then rinsing it ,you will taste the difference.------Sweater

Here in NJ ,if you ran over one and killed the deer you have to pull over, drag the deer on the curb. And you can move on,hopefully your car's damage is minimal.----Sweater

nangyari na yan dito sa suburban illinois, sa kaibigan ng misis ko, usually babaeng deer in groups iyan, pero madalas iyong naiiwang tumawid sa kalsada ang nahahagip. nagiging parang tuod kasi iyang mga yan pag nasilawan ng head light ng auto at bigla pa nga natutulala iyong iba. just report the incident sa nearest cop or police station ....and your free to go home...bahala na insurance sa kotse mo ... and by the way road kills are free meats..... sa iyo na iyon at tapahin mo na lang, which by the way what they did(kaibigan ng misis ko)

Bawal sa Texas magload sa pickup ng road kill. Their advise is not to bec pag ma stop ka ng HIghway Patrol they would assume you did some pouching. Pero I had a Filipino friend who hit one while driving in the dead of night and he load it up. Ok kong walang nakakita . Sayang nga kong mainit pa ang deer, fresh kill. Sarap pa naman ang venison.

I used to work in a place where the parking lot has a canyon in back. Small deer, squirels, rabbits, and occasionally some coyotes and mountain lions often appear at night to wander around. We have signs that say "Do not feed the wild animals" and "Beware of rattlesnakes" !

Wow.
Farthest out I've ever loitered was Alsip or Tinley Park.
Wish I'd come across a deer. It's been rabbits, mostly.

There was this stall at Market!Market! (Taguig/Fort) selling cured/smoked
deer meat (farmed somewhere in the Visayas --can't remember where
exactly) aka 'tapang usa'. Pretty decent stuff. Hope they're still there.

JT,

Is that a lever gun you're using? What scope did you mount on your rifle? Hornady LeverRevolution has really improved the 30-30 ballistics. A 2 inch drop at 200 yards compared to a 7 inch drop at the same distance using round or flat-nosed ammo.

Thanks!

It was a Marlin 336 lever action 30.30 with Tasco 7x42. The ammo I used was Remington but could not remember the box data. It was the cheapest gun and scope on the field that weekend. Even my skinning knife was a Navy Electrician's tool knife. It was my first hunting weekend ever in the states and it was really exciting especially after my first deer. I shot three (max of 4 for the season) that weekend. Stateside hunting is nowhere near Philippine hunting. I had to gut out and skin my kills, no one else will do it for you then I had to carry each one to my truck after each kill. Then at the camp I had to find me tree limb to hook it and drip the blood.
In the mountains of Zambales, someone will carry the rifle for you, cook for you and set up the tent for you. After your kill, you sit your ass down bask on your day's adventure.

I made deer adobo for the office potluck the following Friday. I told them that it was beef adobo but after the party I announced that it was venison.:supergrin::supergrin::supergrin:

Congrats , ang dami ng kuha nyo. I had the chance to hunt in Llano area in 2004 but did not get a deer. I instead got a full grown bobcat by chance with my K 98 mauser 8 mm at 50 yds. The cat was waiting to prey on something when I first saw it. It looked like a mountain lion at first, hehehe.

JT,

Wholesalesports here have Marlin 336A and 336W for sale at $458.00 with a 4x32 scope that is boresighted. I spoke to some hunters here, and they told me that if you were to just hunt deer, a 336 lever action would be the best choice. Ammo prices are very reasonable (even with the LeveRevolution ammo price), and it's a good hunting gun within the 200 meter range.

They further suggested that if you want to hunt other game, the 30-06 is a good choice. For bolt action rifles, Mossberg and Savage scoped combo rifles come into mind. A friend of a friend uses a .300 Winchester Magnum, and he doesn't enjoy the recoil. He regretted buying an $800.00 rifle and not being able to enjoy it because of the recoil.

I bought it used at a Corpus Christi gunshow and it came with a box of ammo. IIRC, I paid $200.00 for it. Would you believe I still have it?

Yup! I believe you. I'd keep the same gun if I happen to buy one. The 30-30 ammo's prices are very reasonable and delivers good performance within the 200 meter range. The LeveRevolution ammo extends the 30-30's range to another 100 meters.

I've tried both Marlin and Winchester. Marlin has a smoother action compared to the Winchester.

At least DEER yan less yuck factor, in here you'd hit baboons (monkey) and yuck factor is way way up plus the fact that if you hit one the rest comes to aid they have a pack mentality.

I found these old photos . Killed this healthy doe in in Rule, Texas about 75 yds away . This was my STG 58 FAL in 7.62 NATO which I sold last year.

Really nice venison after that.

I think I read it somewhere that Texas is almost three times (3x) bigger than the Philippines. I guess that's the reason why I see lines like the "The great state of Texas" or "Don't mess with Texas!". Anyway, I'll check my handy almanac on that.

Poor critters! It's bad enough that they're hunted down (well yes, legally). But to be killed by motor vehicles that way, sayang.

@Da Ninja

Yup. I think generally the Southern states are more gun-friendly. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I also read somewhere that New York state yata is the strictest when it comes to gun ownership.

I once talked to a guy from Florida and he said that Floridans are one of most-gun crazy people in the US. The joke he said, is that if you held a Floridan upside down and shook him, at least one handgun would fall to the ground.

Texas is almost equal landwise to RP with around 23 mil , RP is about 95 mil to date . Deer pop could be 2 mil and hog pop estimated at 3 mil. Most lands here are privately owned and publc hunting is confined to few govt lands.
