All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I gotta have a Model 60.

I don't need a dash, or a lock, or a hammer without a firing pin.

Just a regular ol' Model 60.

I'm going shopping tomorrow!

Does anyone have any pictures to torture me?

Hello Mushinto. And it's a fine gun... yes it is. Here's my model 60 no dash no lock with a 1 7/8" barrel. Circa late 70's.

Here's some great info posted by Glockanatorrrrr in the J-Frame info sticky (http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=808464):
In 1965, a most significant J-frame variation appeared. One that was to have far reaching consequences throughout the firearms industry as the Model 36 Chief's Special was offered as the Stainless Steel Model 60. Instantly popular with peace officers and outdoorsman alike, the first stainless steel revolver revolutionized firearms and stainless steel revolvers are now a major part of the handgun industry. Stainless is so much a part of the handgun market, and especially with the small frame concealable firearms that are carried closest to the body, that of the five J-frames I have been testing, four are stainless, and the fifth has been custom finished to look like stainless.

Beautiful.

Went hunting today, but there were none in sight.

Murphey's Law of guns: "What you want at the moment becomes the rarest gun in the area."

Every shop says they just sold one or that they own one personally, and will never sell it.

The things I wanted last month were plentiful and cheap.

Actually, I love the hunt. It's better than having.

When I was a youngin' the Georgia State Patrol began to issue model 60 Smiths to thier commissioned officers as a "office gun". The local PD bought them for all commanders, as well as the detective division.

When I turned 21 on a Wednesday I walked into the local sporting goods store with one gun on the brain and filled out my first 4473 for a Model 60. I have had this little jewel come along on many an arrest, and off duty errand. There is a love affair with this little gun and the origianl 5BHL that I bought with it. Mine now sports Eagle boot grips, and my ever present bobbed hammer. (original hammer and grips are in the box)

I experienced one set back when she was 23, the the hammer pin sheared off on the frame during qualifications. Smith & Wesson customer service, fixerd her up, buffed her out, and dressed her with the afterfore mentioned grips and sent her back. Total cost was shipping. My little girl was once again fit for the duty whe was intended for some 20 years before.

If I ever see another one, I will snap it up but they seem to be scarce as hens teeth in the original configuration.

I have a circa 1984 M60 in great shape. I am sure I will never get rid of it. Its exactly like it came from the factory, no lock, firing pin on the hammer in great shape ect... One question for those that do have them, have you ever had it polished to pristine condition-- to get it like chrome?

A polished Model 60 on bottom, and a nickel Model 36 on top. Both with Don Collins black Corian grips.

i didn't know a mod. 60 was worth much. my wife has a 642 for carry and an old mod 60 for a car gun. maybe i should rethink that and buy her a taurus for her car gun.

I also have a 1984 era model 60 with serial number ABH-xxxx. Is yours close to that?

I love the little gun. Just bought a 60-9 used a couple of months ago. Love it too. Nice little .357. No lock, great shape.

All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I gotta have a Model 60.ML

I know how you feel. The Model 60 syndrome struck me about 10 days ago. I have a 3" M60 on order.

While waiting for it to arrive, I bought a nickel plated Model 36. Didn't really need it but I had to have it. Even though I cut my teeth on revolvers many years ago, I suddenly realized that my gun safe was conspicuously void of these classics so I have to fill the void!

Better get them now. DC residents may just corner the market on revolvers!!!

just for fun

The year was 1968 and S&W had just come out with their first stainless steel handgun-the model 60. My God has it been that long ago? I was 23 at the time and in the market for my first handgun. My only requirments were snubnosed 38 S&W or Colt. dealer in Tampa had all models of both companies on hand.(Thinking back he must have gotten tried of taking them out of the display case every time I came in!) Some gun rag writer compared the 36 to the 60 and gave the +'s and -'s of both. he stated that stainless was harder to machine and the workmanship on the 60 was not up to S&W standards of the past. At this point I thought the Colts were too big and was leaning towards S&W. His article sealed my choise and I bought the 36. Half down the rest due in 90 days. NIB out the door-68 dollars. Took it with me on my first tour to Nam. Second tour-personal weapons were not allowed. Still have it and money will not buy it!
