Some sort of Frankenstein M1911 with cool tactical names.
S&W pre-locks in the used market are like gold here.
For new seems like everyone all of a sudden has to have a 1911.
Can't go into a gun shop without seeing at least 30 different ones...

For this year my top picks would be.
1) smiths m&p lineup. Selling like hotcakes with the mag and rebate offers and people seem to be loving them.
2) hk p30 & the hk45. These would both be in my collection if I could afford them.
3) Walther pps. The closest thing we're ever gonna get to a slim line glock.
These are just my favorites that I wish I had.

Sig 250 modupistol. All it needs is a shield with a Swiss Cross inlaid in a bright red grip. And a tooth pick and tweezers in the butt.
Not MY "it" guns, but the two I see the most people coming in to get by far at my dealer are the taurus judge (don't care for it) and the new ruger "charger" pistol (I do like this one).

The .45 tactical is an excellent shooter and the grip really is nice, much smaller than the Glock that I replaced with it. It is a large gun though. My favorite of the bunch is the 9mm Sub-Compact model. I can shoot that gun like its an extension of my arm. I might get a 9mm tactical later in the year just for the range. Great handguns.

i love xd's but to be honest i think the new ruger sr9 is going to be the hit of 2008..and no i dont own one or any ruger..so im not just saying this due to fan loyalty. 17+1with manual safety and while ive not handled one i hear its very slim in the grip to attract CCW made in the usa.

I think the current "it" gun is the M&P. I can't figure out why for the life of me. The one I tried felt like too much like a Glock to justify buying it over a Glock. I can understand why 2006's it gun (the XD) became so popular. The trigger justifies it on its own.

a few that I have asked about at a few local shops...
original S&W 29's & original S&W 36's (the repros have the lock and are way too much $$$), original Winchester 70's (new FN manufactured are way too much $$$), Glock 21SF's, Taurus Judge w/ shorter barrel (the latest 'fad'), any Mossberg 500/835 turkey pump shotgun under $250 in anything but ratty condition, FN Herstal USA FNP45, Ruger SR-9, any 1911 under $500
The Glock 23 with Crimson Trace is the current "It" gun.
It's got 14 round high capacity with the STANDARD magazine, fires a 165 grain JHP @1150 fps, has no grip safety to prevent the gun from firing after the officer is disabled or toggle safety required to turn the gun on, and has readily accessable parts available in every market. There is a plethora of holsters avilable for it. It's deadly accurate, never jams or fails to feed and most importantly is rock solid reliable. A laser sighted high pressure, big bore weapon that is as slim as a nine millimeter and converts to .357SIG for even more power with a $90 barrel change. What is NOT to like about this firearm?
Friends, this is THE gun. So sayeth America's Highway Troopers, the FBI and the US Marshals Service.

cost was the main reason why so many federal agencies went to the Glock
the 23 kicks too much -the Sig 229 is a far better gun in that caliber but 23's are not the hot gun in the non-LEO civilian market now
HK p30, sweet looking pistol with the price tag to match.
And a terrible trigger. I was once lured by the H&K mystique. I think they are way overrated. To me Glocks are the best combat/defense pistols around, and their stock trigger/resets, as well as their firing pin are the reason. (At least for me)
I see no merit in paying $800+ for H&K's/Sig's when they can't even finish the guns the right way. Sig is especially notorious for this. One of the worst finishes in the business. They do however have better trigger/options than H&K. I think the only thing H&K can be proud of is their P7, all their rifles, and select USP's. At least the USP's can have mods done to their triggers. I owned a USP tactical, and it was a block. I also owned a P2000. While the ergonomics were one of the best, the trigger as horrible. I can throw 5 shot downs range accurately from my G19 much easier, and efficiently than I could have ever done with the sloppy trigger of the P2000. What a rip off $820.00
If "it gun" means that which is getting the most ink, then you have to figure XD or M&P because both Springfield and S&W are spending tons of cash on marketing and the gun rags are responding faithfully to heap praise on their big advertisers.
Smart money right now is going to CDNN police trade-in HK PSPs (if any are left). Thin, accurate, reliable, ultra-fast into battery, great trigger pull. A PSP or P7m8 Makes an XD seem like a made-in-China Staple gun by comparison.
The M&P isn't bad, but there are some reliability issues reported and it's a big, fat gun--fine for a service pistol, but hardly what I'd want for carry.
A nice man wrote:

Brother, cost is a factor in everything I do.
Wth primary defensive pistols so is safety, reliability, WEIGHT, delivered energy* - which equals "stoppig power", capacity, accesories available and ease of maintenance.I also demand ONE singular sensation trigger pull, the same for each round fired. Glock delivers.
When you say "The G23 kicks too much", I don't know how to respond other than to say, "I can handle it." I fire 2 - 400 rounds a month. I've been shooting for 29 years.
How is the heavier, lower capacity TWO different trigger pulls or DAK Sig P229 a "better" weapon in any of these catagories?? Where I live in the PNW, I advise shooters to consider the G22 or G23 w/Crimson Trace for home, concealed carry, or duty. Troopers in OR, WA and ID carry it on and off duty. NYPD Officers WANT the G23, but are currently limited to the 9mm G19 - which is the same firearm, but in 9mm as opposed to the more potent forty cal. For FBI Special Agents and Deputy U.S. Marshals, the Glock 23 is the standard sidearm.
Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, "In the gravest extreme" Glock beats Sig Sauer in my opinion.
I love Sig/Sauer firearms. The 2nd pistol I ever purchased after my beloved 1911 Colt was a Sig P220, then for a long time I carried a 2340 in 357SIG. Sig is a beautiful piece of engineering. I carried Sig for years before grudgingly becoming a hardcore Glock man. I've never looked back.
"Get rid of that nickel plated sissy pistol. Get yourself a Glock."
That's the greatest movie line in history.:drillsgt:

I love Glocks and Dean is right on with the 23 but the current popular and firearms world buzz is the M&P by Smith. It is picking up steam like Glock did, partly to the credit of the Smith rebate program.
I love my M&P 9c but I think the Glock has more features that make it a slightly better gun. I don't have the 23 but I do have the 19 and 27. They are NOT for sale. ;^)
Gotta agree tha the M&P is probably the "it" gun right now. That may be somewhat artificial with the promos that S&W has been running (I bought two of 'em partly due to the promo), but they sure seem to be selling.
The XDs were "it" a year or eighteen months ago, but are still popular.
The P30 and HK45 are too expensive to be "it".
Glocks, 1911s, and J-frames are too widespread to be "it". They are ALL great guns, though.
The Ruger SR-9 has not been out long enough, and the jury is still out with a lot of folks.

For sales around here definately the XDs and they are great pistols no doubt. The last time I was at the gun shop they were starting to push the M&Ps. Personally I don't like them, but too each his own.
Actually I am not a big S&W fan. I have a hard time with companies that sell shotguns made in Turkey for $2500+. Most of the S&W stuff I see is way overpriced.
My personal choice for favorite gun this year (apologies to the Glocks that I carry 99% of the time) is the XD-9. I just wish they would make a sub compact in 10mm!

Amen brother. Cost. Every business company, military branch, police department, etc. are governed by the almighty dollar. Whether your buying pens or constructing a building ..... the lowest bidder usually gets it.
The Glock came at the right place and right time in the 90s, marketing themselves to law enforcement agencies. Yes the Glock works great but so do dozen other pistols.

IMHO, from the direct comparisons I've been able to make between my MP9c and Glock 17, I've determined that the M&P is superior to the Glock.

Really, with all due respect, The classes I have been at are all Glocks and some SIGS. I tried the M&P, just didn't do it for my PD. It looks like a fish and the articulated trigger is, just weird! I'm really not trying to start anything here or challenge you, but, the M&P isn't cutting it here. I did want to try and like it, just like the XD45, but it just didn't work out. Guess that's why the Ice cream store, Baskin and Robbins, advertises "31 flavors". Everyone has a different taste or opinion.

The only real worthwhile observation you've had is the remark about 31 flavors, and everyone has an opinion!.....and, if you'll look back to my original post, you'll see I've stated my opinion was exactly what I was giving.
>"I'm really not trying to start anything here or challenge you, but....."
Sure looks exactly like the opposite to me.......!
There have been threads about the reasons why some feel the M&P is superior to the Glock......why don't you just take a look?
If you don't agree, well that's fine.....
But......instead of saying you aren't itching for an argument, but in reality, you're salivating for it.........Why don't you begin by telling us your "non opinion" of why the Glock is superior to the M&P?

I must say.....you do have a way with words, don't you SGT45?
>"just didn't do it"
>"looks like a fish"
>"just weird"
>"M&P isn't cutting it here"
>"just didn't work out"
Really?
That way, we can have a basis for the argument you really do want.

Dude, Chill-seriously, out of 8 testing officers, other pistols performed better (I didn't get my panties in a bunch when the DHS went with H&K's and SIGS). Sorry, I upset you. You can easily look at my past posts and see I'm am not one to war. I only spoke the truth of what "I" have observed. I just haven't seen any M&P's in classes etc. As a matter of fact, No M&P's in the County! The M&P might be the greatest pistol in the world, just didn't work out here.

Sorry, The scale or scaloped effect and beaver tail made it look like a "fish".
Yeah- the SIG looks like a Block, the Glock looks ugly. Whatever.
Personally, I want a Shatner/Startrek-turbo 2000 .49 acp express. Now that is the "IT" pistol :)

So strange, but the past half dozen times I've done a course at the Sheriff's range, I've seen very few Glocks. In fact, the last time I was there, I didn't see a single Austrian arm in the whole bunch.
You know what I saw a lot of? Ruger semi's and a bunch of Taurus 24/7's. Since I own neither, I can't justify their replacing Glocks on the line, but I couldn't help but be impressed by both choices. There's quite a bit of negative opinion on Glocktalk about both Ruger semi's reliability and general Taurus quality, and yet they have performed very well whenever I've seen them in action. I've also talked with several owners and they all seem pretty happy with their purchases.
But hey, don't blame me, I was the dusty traditionalist loading up a series 80 on the 15 yard line.
P.S. ~ I have yet to see an M&P on the firing line. Go figure.

The glock 23. I think XD is a close 2nd, though. If they'd get rid of that retarded grip safety, and make all parts readily available, they'd be even better.

Well, SGT45......
I'm not so sure I wasn't dead-on with my suspicions about your motives, in the first place. I have a feeling when you were challenged on the issue, you decided not to back up your generalized statements with something other than opinion......which you are certainly entitled to have.
You were certainly willing for me to put up or shut up, but when the tables were turned, you backed off.

OK Hog, whatever. Your suspicions about my motives were dead-off. I don't have to back up my statements, the simple fact that Glock has over 70% of the LE market and that there is no "MAJOR" PD or Federal agency with M&P's speaks for itself. There is not one agency in this area that carries M&P's. Mostly Glocks and SIGS. I base my facts on what I see here in PA,MD and DE, (http://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/430601935/m/4641094411). You stated that the M&P9 is superior to the Glock 17(you never told us why or backed it up by documentation, as you would say). That's your opinion and you have a right to it, just like I have a right to question that and think that Glocks and SIGs are superior to the M&P. If the M&P is superior to you, so fine, soldier on-more power to ya. Go enjoy it.
Maybe we should just agree to disagree.

Finally got to handle a P250c at a shop this week. Trigger was very smooth. LOVED the grip. Fit and finish were on par with my G23 and USPc. I will be getting one of these in the next few months for sure. Was thinking about getting a G19 (adding Meps), but pricing on the Sig is about the same.

Thank you! I really wasn't looking for a war.
XD.
Seems like everyone I talk to is thinking about buying one. If not the XD, its still the Glock that people seem attracted to. I'm surprised that more people aren't looking at the M&P.

Again, from a Glock guy, I really like this Pistol. It is sweet and has much potential. The G19 really isn't a bad pistol either(I have two). The P250 just has many alternatives that are in the works, which makes it soooooo appealing.

Sig Sauer P250 looks like *it*.
SIG + modular = extremely expensive?
It seems like a neat idea, but I wonder how much it would cost to customize and then have the modular components for a caliber change?
Cost more than having multiple handguns?

That is a good possibility. I hope that they will keep the costs reasonable for the slides, barrels and frames. Hopefully SIG will realize this, otherwise there is a good posibilty that they might price this excellent modular pistol out. As much as I like it, it kinda bothered me they only give you one Mag. A second Mag. cost me $40.00

I have been going to several different gun shops the last couple of months to many times a week and atleast around here it seems the $800 to $1000 range 1911 is out selling everything else 3 (1911's) to 1 of any other firearm. The shelves are stocked about the same way.
The best press must eb going to the XD cause that's what my son is crazy about. (He is usually crazy about whatever is hot in the press)
I'm personally crazy about my Glock 19. Shots well, eazy to clean and ammo is cheaper than anything other than a .22. Magazines are high capacity and everywhere you go.

...the two I see the most people coming in to get by far at my dealer are the taurus judge (don't care for it) and the new ruger "charger" pistol (I do like this one).
I considered the Judge, but the test reports I was reading were pretty bad, so I went with the Howdah. I wanted a real smoothbore. I also wanted a Charger, until I looked at one in a gun shop, but it's bigger than I prefer for a .22 pistol.
By "current it" gun, I assume you mean what is the most recent new arrival that's big news and is on the cover of every magazine, I'd say the Ruger SR9.

For what it is worth ...
In my immediate area, Colorado State Patrol (my agency) and New Mexico State Police have both transitioned to M&Ps. Ours is the .40, and I believe the NMSP is too. NM truck inspectors have it in .357 SiG if I recall correctly.
New Mexico State Police had Glock 22s for a year or two, and they have already got rid of them. I don't know why exactly. I'd have to check, but I think it was one of the larger cities in Texas (Austin/Dallas/Fort Worth) that also went to M&Ps.
Having a Glock, and now an M&P I can see why the M&P is gaining. The grip is more comfortable, and the factory sights are better. I personally like the ambi controls, but the trigger is a bit odd at first.
Anyways, maybe they are more popular out west. There are several major cities/state agencies that issue or allow it now.

Based on current internet talk I'd say that right now, either the SIG 250 or Ruger's P3AT... er, (ahem) LCP (little clone pistola?) both qualify as the "IT" handgun. I expect it (LCP) to be on the cover of every gun rag in the next 2 months, just cause it's so... new and radical (for Ruger that's a truth).
The 2 shops I frequent have both seen a lot of interest in the little clone and have presold over a dozen.

Defiantly whatever that Black gay action hero on that cable TV show uses, who Obama also admires according to ABC news.
Some years ago the "it gun" used to be whatever Jim Brown, Shaft, Ice-T and Wesley Snipes uses.
The TV character Tattoo (Herve Villechaize) also had the "it gun," he may have also had a CCW for it.

Is this GD.
The true 'it' guns now are:
PRE built-in lock S&W revolvers. (mdl 19, 66, 36, 60, 27, 29, 57, 25-2 nd 25-5) with any length barrel.
Glock 30SF and G19 and G23.
The M&P series seems to be the flavor of the day, for now.
For those with a fat wallet. . . Sig. (Not my choice, by far! Not impressed, personally.)
I'll take my Gold Cup over any Sig, any day.

From what I have seen, Charles County Sheriff's Department, (Maryland), has gone from the Beretta 96D (DAO model) to the M&P .40.
Prince Georges County Police (Maryland) has also traded their Beretta (was 92FS) for M&P .40.
Some of the Chuck County deputies really like their M&Ps because of the interchangeable backstrap.
As far as I'm concerned, the M&P does sit well in the hands, but, I still prefer the Glock.

Everyone just wants to have the newest look. But not me! I'm hanging on to my snubbies and Glocks and parachute pants with matching "Thriller" jacket! BTW, if you have to ask....you want get it!
