If I get a JPoint, Docter, etc. type sight for my G-17, what is the best size dot to use for practical shooting?

I like the 3.5-4 moa dot

I don't know what distance you consider practical. For distances up to 20 yards I'd use the 8, and for greater distances use the 4.

Thanks for the input. Practical to me would be the ability to quickly run a plate rack at 15-20 yds., as well as fast hits at 3-10 yds. Is the 8moa appreciably faster?

To me, yes. I use an old Tasco PDP5 with adjustable dot sizes and use a dot even larger for plates at 11 yards. My C-More is a 6MOA, which is a nice compromise.

I have both the jp red dot sight and the burris fast fire on order for my G-35. I just was wondering if anyone has had any experince with either of these red dot sights and your thoughts on which one would work better on my new G-35. Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.Well, you are covered by having ordered both. I had a chance to shoot a G34 with the Nikko XT sight http://www.nikkostirling.com/Content/ProSeriesSights/XT.htm I have a C-more and the 4 MOA dot in the XT looked to be more than twice the size of my 4 MOA C-more even when I have it cranked way up. Also, the XT Glock mount comes with screws that are too short. Best to look at them in person and then decide. Just like you are going to do...

I have a JPoint and I like it but it isn't very durable. I have a couple of nicks in the lens where brass came back and hit it. I'm wondering if a Fast Fire would have been better. I ended up going with the JPoint over the Burris because it was 1/4 of the weight. Not sure if that would have mattered or not.

8 MOA. 4 MOA is too small for close up stuff on bright days.

Well I got both the jpoint and burris fast fire red dots and had a chance to see how the compared in size ect. The Jpoint is lighter but is made of platsic with a plastic lens. The Burris is Aluminum and has a glass lens. The dot 4moa seemed as bright as the fastfire but the jpoint just didnt look like it had the same quality as the fastfire. Also the mounting plates were different. The Jpoint was one piece which would be driven in just like a regular sight. The fastfire was two pieces. A base and a dovetail wedge that fit in the rear sight dovetail. It has two threaded holes in it that the base attaches to. The nice thing about this set up was the base fits flush and is contoured the the top of the slide which looked like it was made for the gun. I mounted this sight on a G-35 but i could see if you mounted it on a Glock with a thicker slide you may have a problem with the mounting screws bieing too short and it would not fit the contour of the slide. As far a shooting with the sight on i couldnt be happier so far. Hitting 6" steel plates at 25 yards was easy and one turn of the elevation adjustment and I was sighted in. I only shot 50 rounds thus far so I cant comment on how tough this scope is yet. It looks great on the gun as well and if I can ever figure out how to post a pic on here I will. Any questions feel free to pm me.

I'm thinking the same thing. You didn't have problems with too-short mounting screws?

ETA: And the 4 moa seems fast enough for action pistol type stuff; 3-25 yds?

I'm thinking the same thing. You didn't have problems with too-short mounting screws? That problem is with the Nikko Stirling XT red dot sight, not the Burris Fast Fire....

Like I said in my previous post. The base that comes with the Fastfire fits the contour of the slide of the G-35 but is not as wide as the G-21 which means it doesnt fit flush. My scope did come with several screws that I think would let you mount it on a G-21. I did read in another forum that a guy had a hard time mounting the base to a G-21 and had to get longer screws. Maybe Burris supplies so many screws for that reason. I do know that this base mount is perfect for the G-35 and it fits flush with the slide. The only problem was getting the wedge to fit the rear slide sight slot. It did require some sanding with a stone to get it to fit.
