Howdy,

I shoot my G34 w/ Heine rear and Dawson front - the thin one. I prefer a good amount of light on both sides of the front sight in my sight picture.

The Meprolights have very little light on either side of the front sight, which I don't like. It looks like I can file off some of the metal on the rear sight window and not interfere with the tritium vile.

Has anyone else done this or have any advice?

Thanks,

Buoyboy

Yes, I had the same problem. I just took a small needle file with a safe (non-cutting) edge, clamped the slide in a vise, taped-off the top of the slide to prevent scratches, and VERRRRRY CAREFULLY removed a little material from each side of the notch. Go slow, make sure you keep the file square to the notch, and check your progress regularly by looking through the notch at a plain white wall or target. I used a bit of Brownell's cold blue to touch-up the bare metal when I was done, and other than the fact that the edges are very sharp (and I don't want to round them off which might cause strange light reflections), it worked very well for me.

DJNiner,

Thanks. Now that I know that someone else did it successfully, I'm willing to give it a try.

Go for it. I open up the notch in nearly all of my rear sights. My eyes are starting to go South, and this really helps.

I use a caliper to measure the opening, then give each side a couple of strokes and measure again. I use a safe-sided file and usually put tape on the sight base. A dab of cold blue and you're golden.

Mac10,

Thanks for the pointers.
