Hello, I just picked up my new (to me) surplus Mosin Nagant 91/30 from Aim Surplus.
The bolt and action are quite greasy. Cosmoline perhaps? What would be the best way to get this rifle cleaned and able to fire safely? I also bought some 7.62 x54R cartridges. I'm told these are the correct caliber.
Thanks!

thats a good link at how to remove the cosmoline. 7.62x54r is the correct caliber for that rifle. make sure you clean the rifle after you shoot as pretty much all surplus ammo for this gun is corrosive.
good article on cleaning after corrosive ammo: http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/corrosive/index.asp
be warned, mosins have a tendency to reproduce. i just brought home number 16 and 17 today.

I just purchased a Mosin Nagant also. I used hot (boiling actually) water and heavy duty liquid dishwashing soap to clean mine. The cosmoline came right off, and the rifle looks fantastic for a 70 year old gun. Good luck.

I used carborator cleaner to get the grease off. Worked great. I kept it off the wood.

How light and handy are the Mosin carbines? I'm looking for a cheap, light, handy rifle to purchase with my C&R. Uses would be trunk gun, post hurricane defense gun.
I used some gel paint stripper to get the cosmoline off the wood of mine. The finish is fine, I just had to be sure to avoid the painted metal with it. I cleaned all the metal parts with Hoppes. The cosmoline on mine wasn't that bad to begin with, so I might have been able to get away with not boiling it and whatnot because of that. I have seen some C&R guns just encrsuted with the stuff. Those I would have done a much more thorough job on.

I found out the hard way that you don't wait a week to clean you Mosin after shooting surplus ammo.... Yuck what a mess I had. Mine is one of my favorites to shoot. "Enemy at the Gate" is now one of my favorite dvd's.
As for cleaning the bolt I used brake cleaner and it worked great.

www.surplusrifle.com will give you the weight stats. But an M38 Mosin would make a great trunk gun. Its light and accurate. I just ordered mine from Southern Ohio Gun about 10 mins ago. $99 handpicked.

Otto, post this up on the TCC or MGT boards, one of us close to you can give you the whole show on how to get'r done.
I've had good luck getting my c&r Mauser and Mossin cleaned up using keroseane or WD-40.
You'll need to take the gun down all the way, stocks off and everything. The cosmoline get's into it all.
If you want to refinish the stock there's a ton of cruffler resto tips on www.theboxotruth.com
And the if the ammo you bought is surplus, it will most likely be corrosive; so you need to be sure to clean the barrel using a form of ammonia to clean the barrel in order to neutralize the corrosive acids.
