View Full Version : Dallas Gunsmith for Rifle Work
I've got a Rem 700 that I need rebarreled. I've got the new barrel, so I just need the old one removed and the new one installed. Do any of the DFW members know of a good shop or smith that I can trust to have this done.

Contact Richard at Big Bear Arms in Carrollton. Sometimes you can catch him at DFW Gun Range on Mockingbird Ln.
McLelland's Gun Shop in Dallas has an excellent reputation, 214-321-7549.
Interesting note about McLelland's Gun Shop: I just went by the shop to talk to the gunsmith there. I explained I had a .308 Rem 700 ADL barrelled action and I wanted a another Remington barrel (from a 700VS) of the same caliber (supplied by me) installed. I asked him how much he would charge to do the work. He quoted me a minimum of $300, but it would probably run upwards of $500.
I looked at him and asked if he understood that I was supplying the barrel to be installed and that all I needed was for him to remove the current barrel, install and headspace the new one. He said yes, but he would have to true the action, lap the lugs, square the threads, cut the threads off my new barrel, rethread it, rechamber it, bed the stock, etc.
I told him I didn't need the action trued, the Remington barrel is already threaded and chambered correctly and that I would do the stock work myself. He proceded to give me a load of horsesh1t about how Remington fits each bolt to match each barrel and that Remington barrels aren't interchangable because (this is my favorite part) each model (ADL, BDL, VS, etc.) is threaded differently. I just laughed at him and walked out.
Arbee isn't the first person to recommend this shop to me, so apparently people have been impressed with the work there. But they must have dealt with a different person than I spoke with today!

did you talk to t.r.?
No, I haven't seen T.R. since the last gun show I attended. To be honest, even though I've let him do some minor work (mostly sight installation) on two of my Glocks, I'm not that confident in his abilities to do much more than swap Glock parts. Just listening to the advice he gives customers that walk by the table gives me an uneasy feeling about him.
I'm sending the rifle to Bryant Customs. After talking to Mr. Bryant and speaking to one of his customers, I feel very comfortable letting him work on my gun.

FWIW--I'm not sure what he knows about rifles but for GLock work, this is the only guy I let touch my guns.

Butch - apologies for the referral. Time to re-assess. Anyone else have a bad experience with McLelland's?
