I am a fairly recent firearm owner and was strongly considering a ccw permit for personal protection, and was curious about the iowa ccw permit classes. Anyone out there already pass the class and can give me some info on what to expect? Like i said, im still a fairly recent firearm owner, and know that i still need TONS of training and practice before i think about being qualified to carry, but have heard so many different things from people in other states that i really have no idea what to expect from the Iowa course. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Go to the www.iowacarry.org/forum/ site. They have all the info you need right there. Basically, Iowa is a 'may issue' state, totally at the discretion of the county sheriff, so it depends on what county you are from. The people at iowacarry.org are real good at answering questions promptly. Also, there is a bill going up before the state legislature to change the law to 'shall issue' and you may want to get involved with that.

Ah,,,you're in Polk County,,,,,you'll need to call up to the Olafoson range or Training Specialists.

There webpage is http://www.trainingiowa.com/

After you take the class and pass the qualification (super easy), then you go to the Sheriff's office and fill out the paper work,,,they'll do the background check and once you clear you'll be good to go.

Polk County Sherrif requires you re-qualify every other year,,,,,or at least he used to. I no longer live in Polk Co,,,,so I don't have to anymore. ;)

It has been YEARS since I took the class. The trainer is the same I'm guessing, back then the first day of class was all classroom lecture and education on the law. The second day was some live fire,,,,not much, then you qualify. I think the outline of the class is on the website.

I think they offer an option to apply/get the Florida permit which would get you something like 30 states,,,,,but I don't remember all the details,,,,again, check out the site.

Enjoy.....
