I just picked up a new glock 36, the price was so nice I just couldn't say no. Havn't shot it yet but so far it feels really nice. I like the thickness and the feel of the grip. For a sub compact it sure does fit my hands nice ( I have pretty big hands ). I still think that I will stick with my Taurus 38 CIA for concieled carry, because it is just so easy to carry, but I am sure the 36 will see a lot of use.
One of my plans is to use it as a backup/bear gun when I am out hunting. I have talked with a couple people and they say that a 45 acp is fine for stopping a bear, although most still prefer the 44 mag.
I also got a peirce +1 grip extension for it. Not sure if I like the +1 yet. Guess I will have to shoot it to find out.
Many folks here have reported feed problems when using the Pearce +1 extended bases.

I have heard that as well. My thought was that they are cheap enought to try, and if I don't like them I will just re-install the factory magazine floor plate.

Re: Bases
If you buy them from GlockMeister they will now sell you a set of extra power mag springs to go with the bases.
I use the extension base on one mag, and keep the other stock. That way I have max concealability if I need it, or max comfort if I need it, either at a moment's notice.
You can new mags from Ivanhoe for $16 ea. (including shipping) if you want, and then have plenty for regular/extended/rotation.

Congradulations on your Glock 36 purchase. I am sure you will really enjoy shooting it. A few words of caution if I may. Do not use any mag extensions on any magazine including the G36. We have seen to many come apart during range exercises to trust ones life to one, especially in bear country.
And two, don't use any type of extended slide lock/release on your 36. According to Glock, and this comes all the way from Mr.Glock himself, the 36 was not intended to use an extended slide lock. While there are many out ther trying to peddle one for the 36, we have found that they are the source of problems in 36's.
The keep it simple principle applies to all Glocks. That is how Mr. Glock had intended it.
Good shooting,
Dean
Happy to hear of your new acquisition.
I have several of the Pierce +1 mag extensions and they all function really well. I have come to prefer the non-extended mags as they come from the factory though. It's nice to have the option...
Enjoy!

An old friend of mine thinks an arrow is good bear medicine, but I think he is a little crazy. Not that it might not stop it, but it seems that you have to get too close!

had Major problems with mine using grip extensions. After replacing with factory originals, no problems.

I bought mine about six weeks ago...it's a very reliable and accurate piece. I bought three magazines and put the Pearce +1 extenders on them, and I have three in their original setup. The mags with the extenders have functioned perfectly, with no feeding problems, whatsoever, hardball and JHP.
You may want to add night sights...I added Mepros.

Well I shot the 36 today, It was a lot of fun to shoot. Not as much recoil as I had anticipated. I tried it with both the factory mag and a mag with a pierce + 1 extension on it. I had no problems what-so-ever with either mag and I put around 100 rnds through it of various weights and velocities. I guess it just comes down to a question of comfort.
I have a 36 and really like it too. Are you talking about using it to hunt bear or to defend yourself from bear while hunting? Unless you are squirrel hunting, your hunting rifle or shotgun is vastly superior to the .45 for bear. I use a .45/70 for hunting bear and would not want to use much less. I have never had to defend myself from a bear, they are usually running the opposite direction before I even see them. Note that I am only talking about black bears, grizzlies tend to do whatever they want.

Although I've had no experience with a mag coming apart and that is certainly a situation I wouldn't want to happen at the wrong time.....
Most of the people who have experienced problems with the +1 extension were not using a stronger spring. Those who also used the extra power spring don't seem to have as many complaints. If you get the extension, get the spring thats is supposed to work with it.

I actually do a lot of grouse, pheasant and turkey hunting. Most of the time I am up there with a 12 gauge with fairly mild bird shot. I just wanted something I could carry for a little extra insurance against bears, cougars, and the occasional moose. I think bird shot would just piss it off. We don't have too many grizzlys where I go mostly black bears but it is still not unheard of to see one. We also have a fair amount of cougars. A good friend of mine had to shoot one a few years ago after it had been stalking him while he was hunting. Another guy I know was up hiking and encountered a bull moose. The moose charged and chased him, he ended up spending the night in a tree.
I am also interesed in protecting myself against the "locals", a few of whom could be straight out of the movie Deliverance. ;g

FWIW, the Pearce extension for the G36 fits on tighter and more securely than the stock baseplate, due to having a "back" that pops into place in addition to using the stock floorplate pin/lock. I'm not sure how it's supposed to come apart under use.
I decided I like mine so much I put 'em on my second mag this weekend... The comfort factor is definitely worth the 1/2" added height.

Congratulations on your G36 purchase!
They do indeed have a rather tame recoil.Mine is far more accurate than I had anticipated.I tried the Scherer+1 extensions on mine, but ended up preferring the stock mags.
As far as .45 for bear defense...
It'll just piss 'em off too. A .44 mag is a better choice, but it is still marginal against the griz.
It will work as long as it can penetrate the extremely thick skull of a bear.
A shotgun blast in the face, even with bird shot, will stop a cougar or black bear charge faster than a .45. I wouldn't ever want to tangle with a bull moose in the rut regardless of what I was carrying. I hear you on the Deliverance stuff. I am originally from the Pacific Northwest and now live in West Virginia. Believe it or not, I feel very strongly that the woods were much more dangerous out there than here, people wise. The people in WV are great and very friendly. And everybody hunts.
In any case, I always carry my Glock 30 or 36, whether hunting or not, except when I am bow hunting and firearms are prohibited.
Cheers,
Tim

Welcome to the small, but growing number of Glock owners that have discovered the best Glock yet!!!
Had mine for a few months, and it is my CHL carry weapon of choice. I also had problems with the Pearce grip extension. Note that I did not use an upgraded spring. Can someone post up a link to purchase one? I would like to have one modified mag and a stocker. Otherwise, I really enjoy the G36.

Here's a link to the mag extension page on Glockmeister (http://www.glockmeister.com/ext.html). I am not an affilliate, blah, blah... :)
The springs are just an item in the table with the extensions themselves.

DeanG back to your post of 5-24...do you know why "no extended slide lock release" on the G36? I know you said 36 and I just bought one for my G30 and was trying to think if it would affect the G30 as well. My first guess is that the grip is wider/thicker on the G30 so the extended release does work. As for the 36 I can't think of any other geometry on the part (slide lock release) that would make it a bad item.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I love mine. I shoot better with it, in spite of the extra recoil, than with any nine millimeter that I've owned. I was a little nervouse when I bought it that it would kick me to hard to control it well, but it doesn't shoot like the Sig 220 or 1911's I've tried. It actually seems more manageable. It also is the easiest gun to carry of the carry guns that I have owned. I tried the Pearce extensions, but I didn't like them and took them off. I like to keep mine factory-original now, and loaded with 200 gr. jhp ammo. I use it as my always gun, since it's so easy to carry and accurate. Of course, those big bullets are reassuring as well.

I have the extended slide stop on my G36. However, it is not the "drop in" part that it claims to be. My Glock armorer had to modify it by taking a couple of mills off the "feed ramp" end in order to stop the incoming round from binding on it as it went into the chamber!! That done, it works fine!! If you get it, please have a certified Glock armorer or gunsmith install the part and throughly test it before you depend on it!!! ;P Modification will probably be necessary!!!! ;)

I have the extended slide stop on my 36 too. Just like Denfoote said, it needs a few mils trimmed off where the magazine follower pushes it up to lock and so the bullet does not drag. The profile should be just like the stock 36 slide lock. Mine works perfectly and has 1000 rounds through it after the addition.
Good shooting!
