View Full Version : personal protection ammo
It's been awhile since I kept up with .40 cal personal defense rounds. What is worth considering?

If you are looking for a quicker response I would venture to say check out the caliber corner.
I personally use just regular Winchester hollow points. From what I've shot at targets it was fine. Haven't shot at people yet.

Speer Gold Dots
Winchester Ranger T
Federal HST
Remington Golden Sabers
Hornady TAP
These are some of the best on the market.

Realistically, any premium brand will do well, even Winchester White Box. Practice with your carry gun, be confident you can place shots well, and become proficient with double taps. Your perp will go down.

I use Winchester RangerT, but my Dept. may be going to bonded Ranger. I'm happy either way. HST would be my second choice. Golddots are easy to find in gun shops, and are a fine choice. The nice thing about .40 is that almost any 165-180gr JHP is a good all around choice. With 9mm, you have to be picky.

I wondered about the 9mm having fewer choices of good rounds. From reading through the caliber corner today, it seems that preferences on the .40 hollow points include all that everyone has mentioned here. However, the 9mm choices are restricted to a couple of good rounds. I currently have 180 grain winchester wb JHP.

I don't think you have to switch until you would normally rotate your carry ammo. Then, you could get a top of the line load.

Thanks, it's good to know that even though my wb JHPs aren't the best of the best new technology, they are still pretty good.

I was in the shop the other day to pick up a box of .40 carry ammo. A State Trooper was there. He said he recently saw a perp get shot in the leg with a Remington Golden Sabre 180gr. He said you wouldn't believe what it did to his leg. He said that's all he'll carry now. I picked up a box. Expensive stuff. $31.95 for 25 rounds.:wow:

I use 180SXTs in my 23/27s only.Love the round and its thump.'08.:)
DoubleTap has a pretty good deal on a sample pack -
200 rounds (4 boxes) for $100 plus shipping (not sure what they charge for shipping)
I gave them a call a while back and ask if I could order 2 boxes or 165 and 2 boxes of 180 Gold dots - they said no problem for a first time order.

I have been carrying 165 grain Gold Dots for years.
I went ahead and got some 180gr gold dots. It seems like these have the largest following....
Thanks for the advise!

Winchester Ranger T, 165gr for my G23s/G27s. Functions reliably, it's what the local SO carries (they use 180gr), and I get great prices from a local supplier ($20ish for 50rnds).

While I like HST's and Rangers and Gold Dots and such, I have a soft spot for the regular Rem 180gr JHP like you get at WalMart.

In my Department we switchedfrom Federal 165 gr JHP to Winchester 180 gr JHP. As with any round bullet placementis paramount.
I like Doubletap.

I've been carrying the 155 and 165 versions of this ammo for awhile. It's what the Indianapolis Metro PD carry, but I'll probably just go with the 180 HST the next time I buy ammo.

I also like the Remington Golden Sabre-180 gr bullets. I have ejected and reloaded the same bullet over and over and it did not setback as some of the other high dollar bullets/ammo I was using. It also shoots accurately, quality control is excellent, no feeding problems and has a good expanding hollowpoint bullet. At the moment, it is my SD ammo of choice after years of trying many brands of ammo. YMMV

How would you compare the 180gr remington golden sabers to the 180gr speer gold dots that I just purchased?

IMO, Speer Gold Dots is right up there with the other major American manufactures of Ammo.
Speer Gold Dots,Winchester Ranger T,Federal HST,Remington Golden Sabers,Hornady TAP are all good, safe and major factory tested ammo. The Double tap and Buffalo Bore/or simillar ammo are hot. I will say,"Really hot" and you can get buldges or worse in factory .40 barrels from the pressures they generate.
In my opinion, at pistol fighting ranges, shot placement and ammo from the major American companies will work for most people.
