They only made these for about a year, the Model 242 Airlight Ti .38sp +p.
Built on the L frame, Centennial style. Sibling to the 5 shot model 296 .44sp.
Pretty cool, huh?

Very cool! I didn't know they made those.

Every once in a long while you'll see one pop up. My gun sat on the dealer's shelf for almost 2 yrs before I came along with a CZ RAMI (that I hated) and made the trade.
It only weighs 18oz and is overbuilt for anything .38sp. Good DAO trigger too.
Never regretted it.

I found my next must have

I found it's sibling, the 5 shot .44sp 296 at the shop today...and it's income tax time.:whistling:
Berto,
A true patriot you are, putting that money back into the economy.
When it comes to guns, I'm downright flag-waving (not that I'm not, in any case)!

Yep, I'll drive us there. What time should I pick you up?
My next is a 637 or the 242 if I can find one. Trust me I'm looking. Thanks Berto!!!:wavey:

Great looking "little" snubby, I'd like to try one out someday.
Hey Glockanatorrrrr,
I think I'll need you to swing by sooner than later!
I'm in total agreement with you and all the others drooling over the 242. For me, it would be about the perfect nightstand gun, plus a great all-around handgun in general -- and it would make a really sweet companion piece to my 686 too! :)

I thought I'd share.
Went to the local indoor range with my 242 Air Lite L frame 7 shot snubby and a GP100 3"
Being the Snubbie Club, I'll focus on the Smith.
Ammo used was PMC Bronze 130 gr FMJ and Speer Lawman 158gr +P TMJ
10yrds DA 1 shot/sec or faster.
Left group was the PMC std pressure, right group the +P 158gr (14 shots ea.)
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/4171/stuff333hr5.jpg
Then all the way back to 25yrds, best effort of two tries each ammo, 7 shots.
Surprisingly not too hard for a DAO revolver. The PMC went 3.5" , the Lawmans, 4.5" (strung 'em a little)
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/9052/stuff334hr1.jpg
Finally, I used the B27 target for some fast shooting, target was 10yrds, shooting as fast as I could reaquire sights, worked out to a little over 1/sec using the +P ammo. Recoil is hard, but sights went straight up and down and not as bad as full power .357 in a steel gun IMO (the other gun I was shooting).
It probably would have been a little worse dispersion on a standard black B27 as the sights would be harder to see, I like the white ones.

Mine was priced at just that, $450.
The 296 (.44sp version) down the street is priced $475.

I got one today... Anyone know how many they made? I did my homework and found out they only made them in 1990 and no more. It came with an El Paso Shoulder Rig and two speedloaders. I think it needs a spring kit though.

I'd love to know.
Nice find!!
My wife bought one of those; she loved the concept. She calls it her "humpback" gun.

If you're referring to springs, no. I'm pretty happy with the trigger. The Ti guns often need a few hundred rounds to get that 'slick' feeling the steel guns have IMO. They feel more mechanical when new.
I was just agreeing that it would be nice to know how many 242's were actually produced.
The grips on mine are from Craig Spegel, you can get them here:

Nice folks to deal with, too.
I'll take the blame.

Thanks for the link. I like the look of the walnut. Do you mind if I ask what the $ looked like, since they do not post them? I was going to email smith and ask so I will let you know how many were made.

Because of the different grades and whether checkered, they run between 70-120 dollars. I believe my cocobolo grips were $90 shipped.
I know, it's pretty expensive, but they are excellent quality.
For me, they just have the right thickness, fit and looks, so I spring for them.:faint:
I'm going to order another set for my model 36 too as the hogues just feel wrong.
I saw another 242 at a local shop yesterday, they had it priced $499.
I commented,
"cool, you guys have a 242.."
They didn't know what the hell I was talking about.
AWESOME GUN!!!
Berto, you rock
