Occasionally when loading my G21 (glock 10 rd mags loaded to 9 rounds)from slide lock, the first round will jam. The cartridge nose points up.

Anyone have any idea as to why?

Thanks

It's kinda hard to diagnose a problem from a distance, but I'll give it a shot.

Usually, this type of stoppage signals an excessive gap at the front of the mag feed lips. Does it do it with both (or all, if you have more than two) magazines? If you can't tell your mags apart, lightly scratch a number (1, 2, 3, etc.) on the bottom of your mags, and each time it happens, check the number to see if it's the same mag. If it is, it's a mag problem; replace the bad mag (or mark it for range use only). I have a G17 10 rounder that has given me probs, so I painted the bottom bright orange and use it for stoppage/malfunction drills.

If it's not traceable to a single mag, then it could be several things, including ammo probs. Try different ammo and see if the problem goes away.

Does the round stand straight up in the ejection port, bullet out of the gun? Or does it hit the top of the barrel hood, and jam against it? Does it ever do it during firing, or ONLY initial loading? Let me know what happens, I'm always curious about these things...

I have the same problem on the first round in a Kimber. The round seems to bind on the barrel hood. I can shoot an entire mag after the problem with no FTF's it is just the first round and then releasing the pressure of the slide on the jam and the round feeds perfectly. I have looked at the shell mouth and find nothing out of the ordinary. I use a Lee FCD in the fourth position and make sure it is set properly. It happens with SWC and JHP's that have been reloaded. Once with a first load of Starline brass the mouth of the shell was deformed to the point that I didn't feel comfortable to shoot it. I have stripped the gun and looked and felt the chamber area and don't feel any rough spots with my finger or with a dry cotton swab.

I had some FTF with 9mm mags in my G17 on the second round only. Replacing the springs and 2183 followers with 9mm3 took care of my problem.

It only happened with my 145gr reloads in 2 mags, but not with lighter bullet weights.

sounds like the mag is releasing the round too early and it is trying to jump out of the ejection port, before the barrel hood can capture it, for fear of the fire and brimstone awaiting it in the chamber ;e

should just be one mag.

of course it could also be a conspircy by a weak recoil spring, trying to help the rounds leap to freedom, by slowing the speed of the slide moving forward...banish the recoil spring immediately ;g...

you might just be "riding" the slide, when you're releasing it, and affecting the timming

If your mags are new make sure all of the rounds are seated to rear of the mag and press down hard on the last round so the trajectory is perfect.

I had this problem with new mags. The 10th rd. would not seat properly and if I would so much touch it with my finger the rd. would pop out of magazine.

Leave Mags fully loaded for a week and DO NOT touch them. This should be your solution to your prob!

When your gun is empty, release the slide, change mag, and RACK the slide... i don`t think, you will have any problems.
