WW2 German Luger value

How would one go about getting a basic idea of the value of a authentic original German Luger. I have not had eyes on but am just testing the water for a friend. It has been in the family handed down and is to be all original probably good condition.

First get a detailed description and pictures. Depending on which variant, in what condition, price could run from some hundreds of dollars to several thousand. If it is something out of the ordinary, there is a Luger board. http://www.lugerforum.com/
