1911 recoil spring

I apologize in advance for what is probably too basic of question. Did not pay enough attention when disassembled 1911 and am wondering if recoil spring needs to go on certain direction. One end is closed and other is open. I think closed end needs to go by recoil guide rod and open end out by muzzle but would like a clarification. Thanks in advance for whoever is willing to reply.

Correct, the closed end of the spring goes on the guide rod first. Open end should point out towards the muzzle.
