View Full Version : OK Boys and Girls....
I have an assignment for you.
I noticed when I was at Greenwood Park Mall the other day that the mall rules said something like "no weapons even with LTCH". At Washington Square Mall the sign reads "No weapons of any kind". I thought it was interesting that there was two different ways of stating the same rule. Here is your mission if you decide to accept it. Use your cell phone camera and snap a picture of the "no weapons" rule at your local Simon mall and post it. I would do so but I do not have a camera in my cell phone and the mall does not like you taking pictures inside (something about terrorism and security )

Castleton Square Mall in Fishers is a Simon mall and they have no such signs posted, even on their "rules" list at the entrance.
Interestingly enough, though, they do have a "no hoodies" rule.

I didn't forget. I've been lobbying for them to make a comeback. The whale-tail thong is one of mankind's greatest inventions, right between manned spaceflight and pre-packaged snack cakes.

University Park Mall in Mishawaka has no such signs. I've never even seen a rules list.
That said, after shots fired at UP mall in 2006, I will not enter that mall without a G17 and two spare mags.

WHAT!?!
Okay, that's nuts.
I know several bars in Ripple have no hoodie rules, but the mall.
Almost all of my sweat shirts are hoodies.
Does this mean Dick's can't sell them?

You can wear hoodies, you just can't wear the hood over your head or the scary Segway-riding mall cops will yell at you. And yes, it is nuts. Why they think it will help deter crime is beyond me. "Associated with gang activity" or something, I'm sure.
I actually saw one instructing a ten year old kid wearing a knit cap with his hood over it last weekend. The kid was walking with his mom. I'll bet the guy went home that night and told his wife he broke up a major terrorism plot at work that day. It amused me to no end to stand not ten feet away and watch this while carrying my Springfield under my jacket.

Now that's stupid. I'm sorry, I don't take orders from any mall ninja, especially on a Segway. We should have a GT get together at the mall, open carry with hoods up.

Oh wait, that means I have to go to the mall.
I wonder what the mall ninja would say if I told him to go cram his Smokey the Bear hat up his Segway. (Ed Note: I hate our new Smokey the Bear hats, no offense to the bear)

Most metro guys I work with don't even have their "campaign hat" put together. Its still in the box. I just don't think they look right at all with the metro uniform.
At least you get a decent hat though IPDBrad. We are only authorized baseball caps. They don't help much in the rain. :steamed:

Thank God we don't. I put mine together, with the help of the video and a buddy. I knew if I waited until the day I had to wear it I wouldn't remember how.
There are a lot of guys who have thrown them in the attic, without putting them together.

Saw it the enterance where Applebees is located.
Washington Square did not have any such "rule" two years ago. Then the "new" rule was added to the sign in red about a year ago. That sign has now been replaced with one with it in black.

I didn't even bother to look. I was in there for several hours before Christmas with Mr. 1911 on my hip the whole time. I had it covered by my shirt, but it is an OWB holster and the bottom tip of it sometimes hangs below the bottom of my shirt. Either they didn't see it or maybe the fact my brother and dad were spending over 3k there that they decided to ignore it.
As a bona fide mall ninja, you're good to carry (discreetly) in Terre Haute's mall (well...maybe after 3 when the morning shift goes home). Most of us on the evening shift either: don't care, request to see license, or actually prefer you carry since we can't. We're required to act on open carry (i.e. "please pretend to put it in your car/cover it up") in order to not get fired, but I've spoken with several people who were carrying and I can honestly say I've never even asked someone to put it in their car. Although to be honest I'm baffled as to why anyone would voluntarily go our mall.

With all due respect, I wouldn't show a mall cop my library card, let alone my LTCH or ID.

Eh, the mall in Terre Haute isn't that bad. They have a bookstore and a few other interesting things. It's not like Honey Creek is like Lafayette Square or Washington Square in Indy!
Hey ... if I became a mall cop, would I get to ride a Segway too?

You know you can rent those downtown, right? Then you could pretend to be a mall cop, I guess. Patrol the riverside or something, shining your fire-starting flashlight at thugs.

That is exactly the time of year that I avoid the mall the most.

I understand where you're coming from, many times I feel the same way. It's just that I risk my job even just asking for a license. I've almost been written up/fired for it more than once (because corporate thinks I should call the police), all it would have taken is for our corporate to have found out. It's just a simple request so I don't think twice about you and if I ever face disciplinary action I can at least say I saw a carry license. It's not me being a jerk, it's just me saying "hey, help me out here, I'm stuck in the middle." Again, concealed is concealed for me, this only applies when someone puts me in an awkward position.
Believe me, we'd rather not be wearing campaign hats/ties and dealing with stupid little things while dancing around bizarre corporate policies and managers, but that's just how it is for us. We make the best of it and put up with the ridicule of people along the way. Same for the little blinking light on the security vehicle going 24/7..... :dunno:
Those who work security in Terre Haute know the security opportunities are somewhat lacking. I went from being an on-call armed guard making 10.00/hr wearing a semi-comfortable uniform that I could conceal carry in (when not officially armed) to wearing the mall security monkey suit making considerably less and being unarmed just so I could have better hours. In fact, I actually just got my bachelor's degree and I'm working on getting in better shape so I can go into the military in the near future.
Anyway, that's just my way of trying to explain it a little from the other side, I'll put my flame suit on in the meantime. All that aside, I'm really glad you guys carry (since I can't) and I sincerely hope there are more like you at the mall than I'm aware of.
That is exactly the time of year that I avoid the mall the most.
Me too....:whistling:

IPDBrad, next time you stop someone for carrying a concealed Segway, make sure you tell him to get a quality holster for it. ;)
Did some recon on my Segway while wearing my hoodie.
The attached photo is that of the "Castleton Square Mall Rules"
Interesting to note, you can not bring your own Segway to the mall (this broke my heart). Nor can you carry a firearm or other weapon. Didn't see anything specifing hoodies (whew), however, their is verbage in this decidedly unAmerican list that would allow the MJ's to oust you.
Editorial:
I have previously denounced the IMPD county mounty style hats as the worst look ever. Noting that I am an avid cyclist and always wear a helmet when riding, let me now state the worst look ever is....

Is there any way to get data on the number of calls to police/911 regarding carjackings, armed robberies, physical assualt, etc. at the Castleton Square Mall (or other mall)? Wasn't the carjacking where the girl bailed out from that lot?
It would be interesting to have data in hand. We could all stand at the sign when we go in, and tell the patrons walking by "It is amazing they don't have armed guards, they disarmed law-abiding citizens, and now they are covering up the fifteen car thefts, seven car-jackings, and forty-eight robberies reported in the last 12 months" (all made up, until we get real data). Shrug and say "I come here when I have to, but I NEVER let my wife and kids in without me with them. I love them too much to send them into this crime pit!".
That car jacking you refer to wasn't reported by the news for 10-11 days when a pursuit occurred out on the west side. There was also an additional carjacking at the mall on the same day, different suspects. Apprehension was made on them, thanks to Onstar and some fine work by IMPD officers.
Castleton Square is the top location for police runs on North District. This is thanks in large part to the number of shoplifters and fraud cases that stem from there.
As far as violent crime, Castleton has very little considering the volume of people in the area, but it does exist.

So you'll be selling all your shootin' irons and moving to Castleton?
As much as I dislike our mall, I suppose that's the advantage of smaller malls. We've not had a serious violent crime or even car theft in the last year that I know of. We've had a couple of vehicle break-ins and the usual fights between acquaintances but that's about it. That doesn't count stuff like shoplifting and fraud of course (Hautians seem fond of not paying for things). Actually most of the people I can recall offhand as being a serious problem come from Indianapolis, Gary, or occasionally come from one of the prisons.
Naturally it's due to the tactical skills of the elite mall ninjas there...........
