I was born and raised in Michigan. I'm considering moving back.

Does Michigan "allow" short barreled shotguns, short barreled rifles and sound suppressors?

If you want to be in the "area" and still own the toys, Indiana or Ohio may be better choices.

Is a 16" barrel on an AR too short for MI?

Anything under 30" overall is considered a pistol and must be registered. Rifle barrels must be 16", shotgun barrels 18" to be legal.

A 16" AR is fine.

There is a move afoot to get suppressors permitted in MI, but no final answer at this point. SBR and SBS are a definite no-no. As others have mentioned, overall length is important in MI and the state has decided that the gun be measured with a fully collapsed or folded stock.

Not a biggie, as you just register the firearm as a pistol.

Why are handguns registered?

Long story short: Black doctor wanted to buy a handgun to protect his family. White gov't didn't want him to have it and decided to form a registration scheme to keep track of any blacks who had handguns.

In this case, white government = KKK.

Thats why Howell is or at least was, one of the centers of KKK activity in the US.

Howell was only a "center of KKK activity" in that the Grand Wizard owned a farm outside of Howell, where they would hold their summer rally. The vast majority of attendees were not from Michigan, much less the Howell area.

SBS is allowed on a C&R qualified shotty...must be done on a Form1. I believe the same is true of a SBR... Dremel over on ar15.com has successfully gone through this process 3 times and has documented this over there.

This case was directly responsible for the Michigan Legislature crafting the whole gun board/purchase permit/registration scheme to keep handguns out of black hands.

It had nothing to do with Howell. This happened in Detroit.

In the '20s in Michigan, most of our Legislators, Civic Leaders and Judges were Klansmen. It was quite acceptable in that era.
