View Full Version : Indy more dangerous than NOLA, NY or SF
Just a passing comment, really. But as I was just listening to Frommers.com Editor David Lytle mentioned (and said he mentioned on a radio show the night before) that the most dangerous place he ever lived was Indianapolis. Not NY, not SF, not New Orleans that was being discussed the night before on the radio.
You can listen here - his comment is at 17 minutes 26 seconds into the program

Maybe he went to college in Indy and the rent was more friendly where he was living.
I doubt "naptown" has much on the other 3 mentioned.

Hip-Hop drug and thug infested ghetto. Most people call it Marion County.
I call it place to die early.

Hmm, spoken like someone who's only visited or listens to the news.
Indpls isn't that bad, yes it has some neighborhoods that are bad news, but what big city doesn't? To say Indy is more dangerous than N.O, NY, and some of the others mentioned, is outlandishly foolish. Maybe he personally felt more of a threat here, because of where he lived, or something like that.

Gary and Hammond Indiana are worse than Indianapolis, this is a fact.

Are you talking about the Marion county in Indiana? Sure doesn't sound like the one I live in.
Does it have crime? Sure. Most of it is pretty contained to certain areas though and trust me, you would know if you were in one of those areas. In fact I drive through one of those areas every night at 11pm on my way home from work. It was the reason I bought a P-3AT to always have on me. So far the "homeless" (I use quotes because they have homes, they are just too lazy to get jobs) have bothered me more than the criminal element.
I feel A LOT less safe in Chitcago. Not only is it bigger and has more crime, but I can't arm myself. I stay the hell away from there as much as possible.

Guys, guys, can we get some numbers?
How is "dangerous" defined? Murder rate, battery, robbery rates? How are we defining dangerous???

And South Bend is worse than both of them. Our crime is under-reported and under rated by the our idiot mayor.
South Bend has been on a steady decline lately and I'm not sure why.

That is interesting coming from someone living in the shadow of Gary.

The Mayor and Democratic party. Crime wise the previous Chief of Police destroyed the morale of the department. Policies were created that basically punished officers for minor errors and mistakes. The thug was always right was the mentality of the city administration.

South Bend got more problems than it can count. The first thing that need to happen is the mayor and his cronies need to be fired. Then gut the police administration and start from scratch.
Thankfully, I live in the county, Canarreci still has some common sense.
Only two years left in IN...

Maybe I should write him?

I am not trying to put down Indy or any other place in Indiana. I live here and I am proud of this state.
#1 Good gun laws
#2 Good hunting and fishing
#3 Good hiking
#4 Good horseback riding
Etc.
My post was meant to say where ever there is much higher than average crime you find a Hip-Hop culture more often than not.
In Indiana that means Marion County And Lake County where I live.
The murder rate in these two counties is greater by far than most counties per capita in the States. Sorry to you Indy guys who took offense Lake county is no walk in the park Bill

I didn't take any offense, but I don't think thats what you meant by your comment, it was pretty clear what you said. You're saying that per capita, Lake county's homicide rate is lower than Marion County's? Thats a good one. Second, compare Marion County's homicide rate, to any other big city in the country, and I'm guessing we'll come out pretty low. Finally, and this is fairly important, you hear about very few "innocent victim" murders here in Indy, 90% of the crime, are crack heads killing each other off.

From FBI UCR Stats
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm
City Population Violent Crime
Indy 800,969 3845 .4%
NY 8,165,001 25,132 .3%
NO 431,153 2255 .5% 2006
475,128 4596 .96% 2003
No stats for NO in 2007, the stats listed for 2007 are preliminary figures.
I listed post-Katrina and pre-Katrina figures due to the fact that it has been readily reported that the hurricaine actually pushed out a large amount of people including the criminal element. Time magazine had a cover story in 2006 about this, discussing one issue that NO govt was working on, preparing for the return of criminals and trying to get the CJ system improved before crime seeped (not flooded) back in.
Should also be noted that there are more police per person in NYC than in Indy.

I do not defend Lake county! Gary, East Chicago, and Hammond have terrible crime. I am 26 miles one way from my job in Illinois. I can't wait to retire and move out of Lake. The crime up here continues to spread; Hobart, Merrillville, And Portage just to name a few.
Ageed the majoity of this violent crime is on themselves but it still spreads to "safe" communities too. At least Indy got a new mayor along with some of your suburbs, in Lake county they re-elected the same garbage that got us here in the first place!
I still love Indiana and I love Indianapolis but you have to be aware the hood is spreading.

Crime spreading is a nationwide problem, not just an Indy/IN problem. The problem is that the...... lets say, socio-economic class that produces the most criminals is the one reproducing the most.
