View Full Version : Ohios carry law
I currently have my ccw license. But I have what might sound like a dumb question but I just want to make sure if I am carrying it is legal. I currently carry my G26 in a jit slide holster from don hume products. I love the jit slide but my love handles (haha) push the top of the gun out making my shirt bulge because the belt loops on the holster are near the bottom of it. So I am either needing a holster that carries a little lower (any suggestions) or go to a pocket carry which I really dont like , and I dont like Iwb either. So if I go to pocket carry does my gun , according to Ohios ccw law , need to be in a pocket holster? or can I just put my gun in my jacket pocket without a holster? Cause I know when you keep your gun in your car its suppose to be in a case that buckles or snaps or something , or it has to be locked up in the glove box. What if I wear cargo pants can I just carry in the pocket that sits a little lower on the thigh? I guess basically my question is does my gun have to be in some type of holster if its on me?
To my knowledge the law refers to pistols remaining in holsters a few times and makes no mention of remaining in pockets. I can't find a definition of "holster" in the law, but without a court case to support carrying the thing in your pocket, I would save youself the hassle and just buy a pocket holster so you are covered no matter what.

I pocket carry quite often but it's in a DeSantis Nemesis holster. (GREAT by the way!) I'd look into one of those before just dropping it in a pocket because technically the weapon is not 'secured' in a holster on your person as the law states.
I like to carry in a holster on my belt but I would like something that carries a little lower then the jit slide. What about a pancake? If I cant find a better belt holster I will check into one of the pocket holsters you guys suggested. thanks!

I carried a full size 1911 in a Galco Concealable. The gun and holster rode nice and close to my body, but I did have to take care to find longer shirts.

YMMV
The only time the holster comes into play is while you're in your car. If you are carrying on your person, it must be holstered. So, yes, get a pocket holster to keep yourself well within the boundaries of the law.
As far as out of the car, there is no specification that it must be holstered, BUT, for safeties sake, put it in a holster. That way also, getting in and out of the car isn't forcing you to fumble needlessly with your firearm.
