I stopped into one of my favorite shops today and I saw a Colt Python serial number 596, which puts it at year 1956. This thing was beautiful. The finish was better than any of my Pythons and mine are in great shape. It came with the original box, target, cleaning rod, and sight adjustment tool. Believe me when I say the royal blue was flawless, like a mirror. The barrel was 6".

Pythons started production in mid 1955 and this serial number is from early 1956. My oldest Python is from 1965 with serial number 44xxx. These revolvers have always been my favorites and I've always wanted a 1950's model. I never thought I'd see one with that low a number. Its temping.

Price?

Seems like all pythons are high. An early model would probably be really high.

what was the price?!?

Sorry guys. I left that out. Price was $1800, but I know I could get it down at least a hundred, maybe more. It doesn't seem too bad considering the as new condition for a 50+ year old revolver and the fact it has the original equipment. Plus, I've seen Pythons from the late 50's in that shape with similar prices. This is the earlest model I've ever seen anywhere, including online and in better shape than any Python even close to that year that I've seen. I couldn't find a mark on it and it could pass for unfired.

bac1023, I don't know how experienced you are with pistols, but if you're really looking for a nice gun you should check out the Glock 17. Compared to the Python, it's lighter, cheaper, and it holds more bullets in its clip.

You had me going for a second.

Was I the only one who read the thread title and thought that bac bought his 596th Python? I mean he does have a ton of them. ;)

I'd go for it. I paid $1000 for a 98% 1982 Python less than a year ago. I'd go another $800 for one made in '56. Care to put me in touch with the dealer?

The only gun I would drop that kind of cash on would be an H&K Mark 23. Sweetest shooting pistol I have ever shot. Don't get me wrong I love revolvers but I would never spend that kind of cash on a semi new revolver. It better be over 100 years old and have a story behind it got that kind of scratch.

Not to hijack, but save your money. I had a low serial number, first year Mark 23. I had it about five years and sold it. It sat in the safe, it wasn't a fun gun to shoot. A Deagle would probably be more fun.

Wow. You wouldn't spend that much on a pristine 1956 Python, but you would on a big piece of plastic? I'm not seeing the logic there. I have a Mark 23 and like it, but I have plenty of 45ACPs that shoot much better than it.

I have never shot a Mk23, but I have handled one. IMO there is no way that gun is worth $2000. $2000 can get you some seriously nice guns, all of which I would buy before the Mk23.

I shot a mark 23 before it was sweet shooting gun. I go buy how it shoots vs what its made of or anything like that. Better than any 1911 I have ever shot. My fingers are too short for a deagle.

As far as the pristene revolver vs the hk. I don't buy safe queens. I buy guns to shoot them. I mean thats what they are made for. I just never understood the whole draw of the pythons. I know a lot of people like them but to each his own. I like a good revolver I have a model 19 and a 3 screw blackhawk. I guess I am just not a colt fan. I don't like paying extra for the pony.

But anyway I wouldnt drop 1800 on any pistol an HK, Colt, etc. I don't want a gun that costs more than my car.

That's fair enough, I understand.

However, I'm not sure which 1911s you shot, but for the price of a Mark 23, you can buy a 1911 that's will out shoot a Mark 23 all day long. It will also look and feel a lot better doing it. This is coming from one who owns a 23.

BTW, I fire all of my guns and would fire this Python if I bought it, which I doubt I will.

I owned a Springfield and shot Kimbers before. I will admit both were half the price of a 23 but I am not really a 1911 guy. I like my plastic glocks less parts to loose.

I guess I am just set in my ways like all the 1911 guys, colt python guys, etc. I like my glock for an auto. I like my blackhawk for a revolver. The S&W Model 19-3 isnt bad either.

I agree on Blackhawks and Smith 19s. I think they're both good revolvers. I know this is GT, but Glocks just don't do it for me. When I was younger, I enjoyed them a little more, but these days, I hardly even shoot my Glocks anymore. They have their virtues and I respect that. I do still carry my G33 and G19, a good deal of time, so I guess I should get them to the range again at some point. ;)

My brother bought it used at a local gun shop in the Los Angeles area in the early '60's for $125. Wish it was mine.

$1800 is low I think, I would go back and pick it up. 1800 seems like a lot but with the box, tools and in that condition it's a good price.

I am no Colt fan but a python are about as good as double action pistols get.

Eighteen hundred for a mint collector pistol is not a lot. On the other hand you can’t get squat in a decent auto for eighteen hundred.

I hate to admit it but I have more than that in my pickups wheels and tires, hell it almost cost that much to fill it with gas.

At $1800.00, I would jump on it. Very special Python with box and docs and it will escalate in value for sure. If that was around here, I would find a way to get it!

That wasn't said in jest. If the mood doesn't strike you to buy this Python, I'd be obliged if you'd tell me how to contact the dealer.

Thanks guys. I'm really thinking seriously about it.

The problem is, I have five Pythons already, just none that old or in quite that condition. Actually, one is in that condition, but its from the late 70's, not mid 50's.

I may grab it.

Yeah, the Python has no equal, IMO. I think they're the best looking and functioning revolvers ever made. Accuracy is amazing as well. I shoot mine 100 yards regularly.

Slim,

That Python was gone within a day or two. I'm sorry.

I should have bought it.
