A few months ago we posted that we were looking for a 45GAP: http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=780318
Never came across a G39 but just found a G38 at the gun show yesterday. Can't wait to fire it - but there was no ammo or brass at the show. So we placed an order for brass with Midway. Now we'll have to wait for the brown truck. It'll give us some time to collect reloading data.
Will do some searching but thought I'd also ask. Have Bullseye, 700X, W231 and PowerPistol on the shelf. A fair selection of bullets. Any load data would be appreciated.
Do they make alternative barrels(caliber) for this model?

First, congratulations on your purchase. I don't have a 38 yet, but have shot a couple and plan to get one sooner or later (hopefully the former).

I don't know about reloading data, but you should be able to find a couple of recipes here in this forum. I know the Boge, Gary Newport, and Chad745 all discuss reloading data frequently. I really want to start reloading, but haven't the time in my current position....I'll just collect brass for now I guess.

I don't think there are any conversion barrels for the GAP series yet.

congratulations on your purchasehttp://forums.mathewsinc.com/images/userpix/12495_icon_smile_thumbup_1.gif you will love it .i have the G38 to it is accurate love to shoot it. i two am thinking about starting to reload my own ammo . but if you just do a few web searches on 45 GAP ammo and email them about buying in bulk you can get some real good deals out there http://forums.mathewsinc.com/images/userpix/12495_icon_smile_thumbup_1.gif and when you go to buy a holster you can get one for the G30 it works perfect with the G38 http://forums.mathewsinc.com/images/userpix/12495_icon_smile_thumbup_1.gif

All I use is Titegroup & True Blue for GAP so I cannot help but I'm sure others will pipe in here soon. I use 200 gr. plated FP bullets from Berry's and love 'em. The GAP is easy to reload for as it's almost impossible to double charge and as such has great loading density hence powder position is a moot point.

Alliant's site has some GAP data also, but just for 185 and 200gr I think. I've loaded a few with Unique, but I've not done any major experimenting yet.

Hodgdon has W231 data also:

Yes, Alliant's page gives data for the 185 and 200gr wieghts. If you're looking for 230gr data using BullsEye, I can tell you know, you probably won't find it. I looked high and low! I do have a PDF I got from a freind with reloading numbers for that wieght and would be glad to forward it to you if you need it.

The Speer #14 manual has pressure-tested .45 GAP data for 185 and 200 grain bullets; the Lyman Pistol and Revolver Handbook has data for those and 230 grain bullets as well. The Speer manual has loads for Bullseye, W231 and PowerPistol, if I recall correctly.

Not to hijack the thread but, Gary I shot some loads this week that were 5.0 gr. Titegroup w/ 200 gr. Berry's and I think I'm going to back off to 4.6 until Summer as it's a fairly hot load and when it's 0 F outside the polymer grip has little give!!:whistling: It was too cold to chrono but I'd guess 825-850 fps in my G38 or maybe a tad more.

Some brass and a 3.5# connector arrived from Mudway the other day. Then a side trip to Sportsman's Whorehouse (poor selection, high prices) got my GAP reloading started. All went well except for the taper crimp. For some reason the Lyman taper crimp die from a set I bought about 35 years was not happy with 45GAP brass - the result was not pretty. Maybe there is a subtle difference in case dimensions at the mouth. Works fine with 45apc loads.
To make a long story short, I improvised and used a resizing die - ran the cartridge into the die just enuf to put a very nice taper crimp onto the round. Much better than you'd expect.
Put in the 3.5# connector and polished up the trigger bits ala '25cent trigger'. Now it felt like my other Glocks.
Finally got a chance to fire a few rounds. Found two good loads right away. Tried 185g JHP from Speer and Hornady with Power Pistol powder. The Hornady bullet under 7.4g of Power Pistol went into less than 1 in (5 shots) at 25 ft from a rest. At 200g the Speer bullet was better. The 5 shot group was just 1 inch - the powder charge was 7.3g of Power Pistol. These results are better than many first trips to the range compaired to many other guns we've owned.
The only problem is that these big jacketed slugs are getting expensive - about 25 cents each! We may have to consider copper or moly coated lead, loaded to modest power levels. Against Glock rules perhaps but...that discussion has been beaten to death so I won't even start it again.
But we did enjoy shooting the G38 and may keep our eye open for a 39 or 37.

Consider Rainier Ballistics plated bullets, available from Midway in "free freight" Priority Mail packs of 2,000 bullets as a lower-cost alternative to jacketed bullets. I've loaded lots of these for .45 GAP (and ACP) Glocks.

Gary -
I've had good luck with an unknown CCL bullet in 9mm. So next time I'll add a selection of the Rainier bullets to my Midway order. If I can work up a good load then we'll order a larger ammount.
In the mean time I'm going to try some of these bullets:

He has a table at local gun shows every so often. Some shows are coming up next month - will give him a call and see which one he is attending.
His 230RN is good in a S&W 1911 and the 125CN shots well out of my 357 snubby. His 180 and 200g slugs are worth a try out of the G38. Until the next gun show maybe I'll brew up some loads for the 230 and 225 molys that we have on hand.
dave - stop posting and start loading:embarassed:
