Great pic!
Is it just me, or has The Gunny looked the same for the last 20 years? GLOCKs must be the fountain of youth. Good news for me.

Ermey is nothing like the hardnose DI and host of Mail Call that you see on TV when you meet him in person. You have to stand in line for 45 minutes or longer to get a signed picture of him and anyone who asked and had a camera could get a pic together with him. He shakes everyones hand and is completely friendly and talkative to everyone throughout the day. He did remark to me in humor that I needed a haircut or something to that effect. GLOCK did well to secure his services as a representative. The guy in line behind me who took the picture for me said he wished he had a jelly doughnut to give to him.

Judging by the Yellow Gold Diamond Rolex Daytona he's sporting, I'd say ALL OF THEM!
I have the same watch in white gold, a perfect accessory for a GLOCK!

First three Glocks that I acquired were all black 23C, 30 and 19. Then I discovered olive drab when a friend bought a 17OD. After looking at it I knew I wanted one in OD and bought a 27 in green. Haven't bought a black one since and have thought about selling the black 19 and getting an OD.

Nope, it's only for those 'in the firearms industry'. Do you know any FFL holder that would 'claim' you as an employee?

I caught the bug a couple weeks ago and picked up a new ODG19. Now I'm hooked. Also, I expect you to have that photo professionally enhanced, framed, and placed somewhere prominant in your life. A special photo indeed.

Lee Ermey is a wonderful human being who has not allowed success to go to his head. He is not aloof or stand-off-ish. He spends as much time as possible with each and every person who wants to speak or take photos with him. Great guy! He and I spent quite a bit of time talking about our Marine Corps experiences during the NRA Annual in Houston. He loves what he is doing and he loves interacting with people. He represented GLOCK and the Marine Corps well.
i would LOVE to meet the guy, he is one of my idols. my other was Irwin, so now i want to meet the gunny before something like this happens (damn stingray) i have looked up to him for a long time and to meet him would be an honor :patriot:

I met him in 2004 myself at a car show. Seemed pretty nice. He was signing DVDs and what have you, and saying "ooh-rah" back to anyone who said it to him.

He is usually at the NRA convention too. I think anyone can go to that one.
I will have to agree with USMC06, I would love to meet him. I think I'm going to go watch We Were Soldiers now.
I saw him there as well but didn't want to wait in the line to meet him. Now I wished I had.
Nice photo. He seemed like a real down to earth nice guy.
wish I could meet him. On a side note, what is the best way to get an OD G19? None of the stores around me have any, a few of them didn't know they came that way.I'm about to be in the market for my first glock, really want a 19 for ccw and I think OD would be really cool. Does it cost more for the OD?

find glock's part number for the gun, and ask your retailer to order it.
i think the item number for G19 in OD is #PI1957203

As someone who actually earned the rank of Gunnery Sergeant I'm not real impressed by someone who doesn't mind being a pretend one. I don't know WTF an honorary promotion is supposed to be be he sure rides it to the hilt and the $$$. What a bozo. He did some kind of avionics repair in the Marine Corps. His combat experience is little to none but you will not get that impression from all his BS. He is also not retired, he was medically discharged due to non-combat injuries after 11 years in. Not impressed.
"On May 17, 2002 he received an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) by the Commandant of the Marine Corps (later Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR)) United States Marine Corps General James L. Jones, becoming the first retired military member in the history of the United States Marine Corps to be promoted."

About 3 months after I came home, I got an E-5 (Sgt.) promotion warrant mailed to me. Never wore the rank, but that's what my DD-214 says. Stuff like that happens, but I've never known Gunny (somehow calling him "Staff Sgt." just doesn't have the same ring to it) to BS anyone about his actual experiences. I've asked him about some of it and he always seemed honest. If you ask me, any time served in the military is just as honorable as retiring after 20+ (provided you're not a knucklehead). If HQUSMC says he rates to be a Gunny, who am I to argue with them

I have a lot of respect for Gen Jones and I know how the Marine Corps loves its propaganda but this one doesn't sit right with me. I think Ermey overdoes it especially since he was an Air Winger. Not like he was an 03 walkalot. I would be embarrassed to wear and be referred to by a rank I didn't earn.

So, does that make him any less of a Marine? I think not. He's still a Marine and, as we all are, a rifleman first.

I didn't say it did. It does make him less than he acts like. You won't find many 0311's who believe that an avionics repairman is a rifleman first in the same way they are. Pretty funny even thinking that.

There are grunts and everyone else. Deal with it. Back to Ermey. He has become a caricature of himself. He is a clown and a buffoon. He has about as much to do with the Marine Corps as Gomer Pyle. That silly show Mail Call is a perfect example. I suppose it appeals to a certain type of adolescent macho fantasy though.

I agree with this guy... lets pull all those non combatants away from the war zone. Then we'll let the true riflemen do their job without ANY air support, but by God they will have their rifles.... :steamed:

BullsEye10X
02-09-2008, 20:35
Not to mention the numerous supply and logistics units that get attacked all the time, or pull security when there aren't any grunts around. These "non-combatant" Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen become infantry troops no matter what their jobs are, and they'll fight just as hard, when the SHTF :patriot:
After 34 years of active service in the Corps, service in the infantry and out of the infantry, combat and peacetime, risen through the ranks (enlisted/warrant/commissioned), and having commanded thousands of Marines, I find it amazingly naive that another retired Marine does not understand the concept of the Marine Corps and would try to separate and disparage Marines. Lee Ermey served the Marine Corps well and he is still doing service for the Marine Corps. More than one Commandant has recognized and appreciated Lee Ermey's service. I've had the priviledge of meeting Lee and I walked away impressed.
Much respect for all those who have served!

Hehe, I got my pic taken with Gunny too.
I'm pretty sure "honorary promotion" means the commandant of the Marine Corps believed that he had done more to benefit the corps after his retirement than the other retired marines. Most of the benefit is because he constantly uses his celebrity status, as well as his time and effort, to promote and support the USMC - which you refer to as "riding it to the hilt." Maybe if the commandant decides to recognize your post-retirement contributions, you could criticize R. lee Ermy and the your post wouldn't sound like whining. Of course, that's just my opinon.
As I understand it, his avionics repair included a tour or 2 as a drill sergeant and 14 months in Vietnam, but that is beside the point.
There are people who might have a similar opinion of a Marine spouting off about another Marine who was serving in Vietnam before he was even born and who hasn't put in much more time on active duty, even if all you imply about yourself is true. Some people might thinking you are running your mouth, putting down a guy who has served honorably - even though you can't point to a single untrue thing he's ever said about himself - just to make yourself seem big in some online forum where nobody can verify what you have or haven't done.
Macintosh#1 is only 30 (see his profile), so I doubt he retired from anything, considering the way he objected to Ermy's early disability retirement.

Call me Gunny_GLOCK_27 for now on :)
Macintosh, lets not be an asshat... Gunney is well-liked by many, and he did serve in WARTIME which is much more than can be said of you most likely.
If you staggered through life with HALF as much honor as this man carries, you'd have a right to put him down in my eyes. But, the fact that you put down a fellow marine regardless of his position -- lowers your rank to nothing in my eyes and many others around here.

68 responses and 3,700 page views to this thread! Thanks to all respondents and viewers. Looks like R. Lee Ermey evokes all sorts of input and feedback. All in all I think he is a great spokesman and representative for Glock Firearms and hope that he continues in that capacity for a long time to come! If any of you get the chance to attend the SHOT Show I highly recommend that you do so. Its always an incredible expanse of guns and outdoor equipment.
