Police: Intoxicated Mom Found Lying On Top Of Dead Toddler
Boyfriend Finds Unresponsive Child

POSTED: 6:27 am EST February 6, 2008
UPDATED: 10:10 am EST February 6, 2008
INDIANAPOLIS -- A 2-year-old boy was pronounced dead after he was found unresponsive beneath his passed out mother at an Indianapolis motel room early Wednesday morning, police said.

The boy, identified as Sheldon Bartley Jr., was taken to Community East Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m., police said.

According to Indianapolis Metro police, the boyfriend of Latasha McMorris, 24, called 911 at about 12:30 a.m. when he found McMorris passed out and lying on top of the child in room 104 of the EconoLodge Motel in the 3500 block of North Shadeland Avenue.

The boyfriend, whose identity was not immediately released, told police that the boy was not breathing when he found him.

Investigators said they think McMorris had been under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs when she passed out.

Police said they are treating the case as a homicide and that McMorris was being held on a charge of felony neglect. An autopsy was planned Wednesday to determine what caused Bartley's death.

Investigators said McMorris was convicted of child neglect in July 2007. Child Protective Services removed McMorris' children, including Bartley, from her custody when she was convicted, police said.

According to officials, McMorris also has several prior arrests on alcohol-related offenses.

This sad case has happened many times.
It can happen. Everybody brings the child into their bed at one time or another. "The Family Bed", and all of that. Hey, whatever you need.

People roll around a lot in their sleep. People are overly tired due to irregular, interrupted sleep with a new baby.

Add in a little bit of liquor or weed, and it could occur even easier.

What you might do to prevent this, is to put the baby in a crib beside your bed instead of in bed with you.

Some people are not fit parents and are poor excuses for human beings and this woman clearly fits in that category. I hope she goes to jail for a long time.:steamed:

"Investigators said McMorris was convicted of child neglect in July 2007. Child Protective Services removed McMorris' children, including Bartley, from her custody when she was convicted, police said."

And in less then a year later she regains custody. The system is broke!

If a "parent" can't take care of her/his/their kids, gets arrested for it and children taken away, I sure don't think that parent should A) get support from the state to provide for those kids, B) if given support by the state, then the state should have certain rights in that relationship.

If someone keeps making babies on the state dollar, then maybe someone needs to be "fixed". Look at this mother, she is a habitual drunk who can't take care of her children, and she taxes the heck out of governmental resources.

There is so much time and money wasted on her, from the criminal justice system to child welfare with the initial investigations, interviews, followup, child placement, reevaluation, and return to mother, then followup.

10% of the people take up 90% of the resources, and her child is dead because she shouldn't be a parent.

Look at the big brains on these two bigots! This kind of crap never happens with "good moms" named Betty. You morons need to step away from the keyboard before you hurt yourselves.

This story is truly tragic and speaks volumes about how rapidly civilization is declining in America. It also shows how little we care about our children. But what do you expect from a society that kills thousands of unborn children every day.

All that being said, you two don't need to think for a second that it justifies your bigotry. You're just about as much the problem with society as Latasha.

I know of a case like this- it happened many years ago- I'd say in the mid '50s...
A very "nice " couple had their daughter in bed with them and they smothered her sometime in the night. Just fell asleep and somebody laid on her too long...
You know, there was NO investigation of any type back then...just alot of sad folks.
Times sure have changed.
As more nformation comes out on this-Last nights news (59, 10 pm) said the deceased has a 1/2 sister that was taken away from "mommy dearest" and given to [her] paternal Grandmother. Seems Grandma also wanted the "deceased", but Mommy wouldn't allow it.
News also said that Mommy was scheduled to go into alky-detox the next day????

There's a difference between someone sleeping, rolling over on a child and suffocating it and some drunk lady in a hotel passing out on her kid because she had too much booze or drugs.

IPDBrad hit the nail on the head with his post.

I agree Marc, This sort of thing occurs even without adding drugs or alcohol but when they are added I find fault.

This has happened since the beginning of time and is even recorded in the Bible during King Solomon's reign. (see 1 Kings chapter 3).
