That's cause the internet commando's come out in force when he shows up.
I like Mas. I don't agree with everything he has written, but when I have PMd him a couple of questions, he very promptly PMd me back. Super nice guy.
I figured he at least lurked here because I have seen reference to threads from this forum in his writings from time to time.
Mr. Ayoob is one of the finest gun authors I have had the pleasure to read (and I read a LOT). His articles are articulate, reasonable, and well thought out. Yes, I'm brown-nosing a little.

I read recently that his current favorite carry gun is a baby glock in .357 sig.
Mas sightings on GT are a rare treat.
"Ooh, look, everyone! Mas is out! Mas is out!"
"Shhh! You'll spook him!"
"Honey, get my camera!"
"See kids? This is why you have to protect the 2nd Ammendment Environment. It's the Mas' natural habitat."
I've had the pleasure of reading his stuff. I usually go to it when I'm feeling common-sense deficient; which always seems to coincide with an election year for some strange reason.

I did run across a post of his here once. Don't remember the topic. I remember his avatar was the kool-aid man with cross hairs over it. I remember thinking "yeah,... don't drink the kool-aid". He must have a pretty good sense of humor. I hope to attend one of his classes some day.

I remember him saying once (a few years ago) that "he favored the EAA Witness". Im like cool Im getting that same model. That was one of the worst guns that I had ever laid hands on. Just thought that I would share. Im glad that he has come to his senses and carries a GLOCK now. Peace Out Ayoob!
I'm formerly an editor for a pretty respectable statewide gun group's monthly newsletter. We had him come and speak at our annual meeting - don't remember the nuts and bolts but I remember him being very well spoken and a pleasure to listen to. Nice knowing he's a lurker.

I like his contributions on PDTV. I also like his articles on Backwoodshome
Unfortunately, big names like his bring out the worst in people and I imagine he finds himself being a lightning rod.
I remember learning of this site from another well recognized name I have trained with. I started lurking, and saw how every thread he participated in turned into a flame war. He moved on, and I don't know if he still posts here or not, but he doesn't advertise it in his classes any more.

Don't hold that against him. There is a chance of getting a witness out of the box that runs perfectly. Maybe a 1 in 5 chance. The rest have to be forced to come around.
The odds are probably better with a 9mm or .45.

I met his (younger?) daughter once in Hawaii. Knowing who her father was, I asked her if she liked to shoot. IIRC, her response was "Target shooting is kinda boring, but I really like the shoothouse". Sounds like he raised a good one :)
Being a young single guy, I probably would have chatted her up more but she was engaged at the time to a fellow officer.
Does he still offer to be a free expert witness if you take his class?
He doesn't post often because people look at his post count and say "you don't even have 1,000 posts, what do you know!?!?!?!?!" :)

I've read some of Ayoob's articles. I know he wrote he likes Glock and Sig. Anybody know what he prefers to carry or shoot?
I was reading articles by Mas years before I took his LFI-I back in '94. Mas has carried MANY different guns over the years. IIRC the LEA that he works for in NH was issued the Ruger P series in .45ACP along with Mini-14's. When he goes and teaches LEO's throughout the nation he often carries/uses the same duty gun as those he's teaching. In my LFI class he shot his .44 Mag. during the Instructor quals. IIRC he also carried the same .44 Mag (sometimes completely concealed) while he was hunting in Africa.
Anyone interested in his articles should buy/subscribe to Harris Publication's Combat Handguns and Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement, and he also has a column in American Hangunner called, aptly named, The Ayoob Files in which he covers actual shootings (both civilian & LE) from beginning to end of the event (and then some). For older articles, try and find used magazines of the above titles at gun shops/gun shows. His articles are worth .50 cents or $1.00 that people often ask for when selling these old mags.
It's probably more likely he's a legend in his own mind.

It's pretty much axiomatic: If it's pleasant to carry; it's miserable to shoot. And vice versa. My S&W 642 is about the only handgun I have that I don't enjoy shooting. The Super Redhawk is a pleasure by comparison. I think it's more of a physics thing than a chic thing, inertial mass or some ****.

How true. It would be the perfect carry gun, except for the fact that it wants to kind of jump out of my left hand. I enjoy shooting it, but after a few mags, I'm done. It's a shame....I really want to like it.:crying:

I just picked up the May 08 Combat Handguns. Massad does a good write up on why its really ignorant to use ball ammo for CCW. You would think this was something we'd all learned after Amadou Diallo, but *stopping power* wasn't the point of the article, it was more about the danger that over-penetration causes to everyone other than the intended target.
Anyways, he mentions a thread on a "popular internet gun forum" Titled "Why is over-penetration bad" Points out the idiocy of a few posters, etc, in the article. He doesn't name any of the posters, or the forum, etc, but what do you know..

I don't think he comes here for that reason, I think when you see the sheer lunacy, lack of info, and terrible advice that was in that thread, it probably spurred him to do an article on it. Some people probably saw some of those folks w/ high post counts and thought, "They've gotta know what they're talking about".. and so on.

?? I've had two .45 Witness pistols and both ran fine. Should have never sold the 1st one, the 2nd didn't have as good a trigger. If you stick to the steel frames and something other than 10mm they are fine pistols, much better than their price would indicate IMO.

LMAO....how funny, I read that article when it came out and wondered which forum he was referring to. Good find!
Interestingly enough, Tom Gresham mentioned on one of his GunTalk radio shows that he was recently at Thunder Ranch with Clint Smith and he was shocked to hear from Clint that he recommends FMJ for CCW. He said he was puzzled by it and didn't know what to think...I wish he had asked Clint why he thought FMJ was better than JHP, but he didn't mention it.
Anyway, sorry for bouncing an old thread, but I just came across it and found it interesting.

I guess FMJ used to be used because of the limitations of the rounds and guns of the day, but I don't know for sure why Clint Smith would still have a reason to carry them.

I've had two all steel Witness .45s. Both ran flawlessly and were quite accurate. If the second one had as good a trigger as the first one I would still have it. I think they are diamonds in the rough. I think the polymer one's are a crap shoot though.
