I have someone from another state that wants to purchase one of my handguns. Do I need to have my FFL send the handgun to his FFL, or can I just send it directly to his FFL? I have read the MCRGO FAQ, but I am still unclear, and if I can send it directly to his FFL, how do I get the pistol "unregistered" in my name?

FFL to FFL is the only way to do it as I understand it. The registration trail will put him as the owner, you don't have to do anything.

(based on Michigan transaction, but understood to be federal law.)

His FFL has to send a copy of the license to your FFL before the firearm can be shipped. mail or fax will do. if your ffl will allow a faxed ffl. to get the pistol unregistered, just take all the info(green card) and give them the place where you shipped it to. (ffl)

You can ship directly from a private party to an FFL if that FFL accepts from private parties. Most do; some don't. You will have to include a copy of your DL.

You no longer need an actual ink-signed copy of the FFL for verification. It can be faxed, emailed or even verified on the FFL E-ZCheck system.

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

Have your FFL mail it to his FFL. Keep a copy of a bill of sale and the receiving dealer's FFL in case something happens and it gets traced back to you and you can show you sold it and this is where it was sent.

My understanding is that the purchaser must use an FFL to complete the transaction. Some FFL's will allow the seller to send it direct, while some will only accept it from another FFL. Contact the buyer's FFL and see what they say. They will tell you what's required.

The shipping of guns are sometimes very confusing. IMHO the best way to ship is FFL to FFL.

While we're on the subject...

The caveat being that if the lost/stolen package is discovered to have contained a gun when you try to collect the insurance, you likely won't get it.

And...

-An FFL is only required on the receiving end.

-There is no way to 'unregister' yourself from a gun in michigan, but so long as you keep the FFL's info that you sent it to, they can look at his books in the future and see that it passed through him and is no longer in your possession.
