I shot my instructor's Astra A-100 at a CWP class (200 rounds) no problems except for the slide not locking back. I chose to shoot the Astra over his S&W semiauto.

Only based on one .40 version. Shot well and reliable. Mags not too easy to get.

My brother has an A-75 in .45 ACP that shoots golfball sized groups to the point of aim at about 7 yards and no stoppages with any of the ammo we tried in it, including my 175 gr LSWC over 5.5 gr Win 231, a very light load. I like the gun a lot, unfortunately, IPSCshooter's post about the magazines is true. Also, although smaller than a G36 the Astra is much heavier. I haven't shot one in .40 but I have shot the .45's and 9's and have never been disapointed in one.

Note that Astra is out of business now, which is why prices on used A-75s and A-100s are often quite attractive. The A-75 design rights were bought by Republic Arms of South Africa, and the pistol is being made in 9mm and .40 as the RAP 441 and 440, respectively.
I owned an A-75 in .45ACP once, when EAA was bringing them in... didn't last long though!

For a small .45, I'd MUCH rather have a G36!

I have an A75 in .40. I bought it 'cause I thought it was a Sig ;)
It's O.K., nothing special. Small but heavy. shoots well, but I'm not a fan of DA first pull SA after that, so it stays in the safe. My factory mags are marked 9mm on one side and .40 on the other. Hmmmm, I thought those rounds had a different diameter...

My A75 is also .40 and it IS heavy for single stack. My mags are marked the same, 9/40. The rounds are different, but they get it to work, somehow. Never had a feeding problem.
Thanks for all your replies and help. I ended up buying the Astra...the price was just toooooo good. Haven't shot it yet but it seems pretty solid made.
