I am thinking about using a 2-7X 35 Burris Full Field II Tactical on my 18" RRA
I am looking for input from anyone familiar with similar size, weight and power scopes.
Specifically interested in feed back about the limitations of the smaller 35mm vs 40mm units

I was wondering that too. What is the intended purpose of the rifle/scope? Varminting?

Why? Why not???... I have a Shepherd scope on my 20" DPMS SS bull barrel AR and I like it very much....

Two reasons. First, it seems like an odd magnification range for an AR-15. It's too much for clearing buildings, but not enough for true precision work. Plus the Ballistic Plex reticle is only semi-accurate for light 55 grain loads, and even less accurate with anything heavier.
I'd either go up or down in power. I'd also pass on the BDC reticle. I'd rather have something like a 1.5-4x Nikon Turkey Plex, or a 10x Bushnell 3200 Elite with mil-dot reticle. Both would be good choices for a "budget" AR-15 optic, and I'd just pick based on whether I wanted to perform better up close or at long range.
I like the elite 3200s and 4200s in the mil-dot. I like shepherd scopes also. I just didnt understand the whole 2-7x35 burris thing. The scopes I mentioned above would be used on my ars for varmint hunting. If I wanted close/ medium range it would be a eotech 557 with a flip to side 3x magnifier behind it
btw who compares a sheperd to a burris? Thats like comparing a mercedes to a le car

I don't have a really good answer for that as I am a neophyte in regards to long range shooting.
Here is the information I was basing this choice on
From Shooting Times website
Magnification
You need relatively little magnification to shoot effectively. On full-size silhouettes 4X gives good results at 500 yards, 6X is effective at 700 yards, and 10X works well at 1000 yards. Too much magnification, on the other hand, can be a serious liability. A small field of view and mirage can both cause problems. So does that mean anything over 6X to 10X is bad? No. While hitting a white LaRue target at 500 yards is simple with a 4X scope, locating and identifying a hidden target at the same distance is a different matter entirely. Higher magnification can be a useful aid in this regard. One of the advantages of the modern variable-power scope is the ability to collect information on a higher magnification and to power down to engage targets on a lower magnification.
This Burris scope has a forgiving eye relief according to a post I read somewhereI can't recall.
It is light (12oz) and shorter than most (11.4 in) and has a good exit pupil size. These were some of the attributes I have read are desireable.
I started out looking for a 3-9x 40 and kept being drawn back to this scope based on good reviews for the Burrs FFII line and the price.
This same scope in 3-9x 40 only comes in OD green with the Tac 2 knobs. I prefer Matte black. I am also considering an open box 3-9x 40 with Hunter knobs that is for sale on the EE @ arfcom.
I guess I just can't decide. I only have about $350 max available for a scope and mount and the Armalite mount I consider the minimum I will use is about $75 shipped. I really want a LaRue mount... dream on:brickwall:
Is this going on the RRA with the light wieght barrel you ordered? My eyes arent good enough to shoot yotes and dogs at 500+ with only 4X:wow:

No it is for My RRA 18" rifle. Don't you think 7X is enough for 4-500 max?

Ya know that Leupold makes a big deal about the Mark 4 MR/T 2.5-8X-36 that sells for $900-up. I know this Burris is not nearly that level of quality, but is a similar approach to medium range tactical use

Have you ever shot a Burris? I saw the Shepard scopes at SHOT show, and shot them some earlier in the yr, and I was not impressed. The glass wasn't clear as the burris's I have shot, the elevation and windage adjustments were not as definitive as the Burris, and it was also a good bit more money.
I'm not a Burris kool-aid drinker, but I think the OP could do a lot worse than Burris.

Everybody is different but I know I prefer more power out that far to see prairie dogs and sometimes yotes. I dont think you ever told us what specifically you are wanting to shoot at. Im not a leupold fan either(overpriced IMO). I think the elite scopes are best bang for buck. BTW I dont personally own a shepherd scope either (overpriced also) but have a friend with one I thought it was nice but too much for me

It may not be PC for me to say what I might be shooting at, but lets say I am trying to be realistic as to the ranges 80% of the shooting I might do would cover. 200-300 yards
I have EOTechs for the CQB.
I want a scope to cover the mid range, and maybe for coyotes.
I don't hunt big game, never have.
It would probaly be rare for me to be shooting at anything 500 yards away, cause I don't want to walk that far and retrieve it:embarassed:
I understand that my "needs" may change, but I need to start somewhere

I would go with either bushnell 10x mildot, 5-15x matte tactical i have one and i like it a lot.

OK, I went to a local store today and played with all the scopes for a few hours.
And the Winner is..................................................................
Nikon Monarch 3x9 40mm with BDC reticle
http://www.swfa.com/images/product/medium/8435.jpg
this is the older style Monarch with the Team Primos logo and I ordered it from SWFA for $199.95. The local store wanted $300.00 and wouldn't budge.
It is slightly heavier and longer than the Burris models I was looking at , but I loved the BDC reticle and the fact that the eyepiece doesn't turn like the Burris when changing magnification. That issue would make it pretty tough to use Butler Creek flip ups.

Now I need a mount... probably the Armalite 1 piece for $69

Buying the Team Primos Monarch over @ SWFA for $200 is flat out stealing!!
I have the new 4-16x Monarch with the BDC reticle and really like it.
