View Full Version : pipe smokers!
tobacco, that is
I decided I'd like to smoke occasionally, and as a reformed cigarette smoker I was more interested in something refined. Pipes won out over cigars due to personality, aroma and cost.
I went out and bought a fairly cheap briar that's treating me fine, and some Virgina blend tobacco. I got the pipe cleaners and the tool, too.
So my question is, in your mind what are the "must haves?" Do you have particular favorite blends?
In short, ramble away!
Be careful, it is a slippery slope. I was doing great, quit 4 months and my friend had a baby. Gave me a cigar, and I was smoking cigarettes within a week.

You will need at least 3-4 pipes so that you can allow them to cool and air out between smokes. Otherwise, they will get harsh and some will even split due to being overexposed to heat and water (from the tobacco and your mouth).
Best blends? English are more pure in flavor and have less additives that can harm you. However, their room note is less pleasant (some will run people out of the room). Cornel and Diehl blend some really nice ones for every taste, from English to flavored sugary types.
Get a good pipe lighter (avoid butane or any lighter that acts as a blow torch...it scorches the tobacco). Tend to dedicate pipes to particular types of tobacco...the flavor will be better (don't put flavored in ones that you smoke English blends in and visa versa).
There are thousands of blends and hundreds of dealers.
Good luck.... and periodically check your tongue, gums, and lips for any lesions or white spots. edited for spelling error
as a reformed cigarette smoker I ...

Pole smo. . . oh PIPE. Sorry. ;)
I've found most English blends to be fairly pleasant for aroma. There are some Virginia blends (Somethingorother Christmas Cheer among others) to have a room aroma of old musty ass.
That said, the English blends are like menthol cigarettes to me. Bleech.
I gave up my pipes a few years ago. Too much effort for not enuf enjoyment. Gimme a fine cigar. (Just not one in Crillollo wrapper - must be made in that same place Christmas Cheer is made.)
I liked the ritual of pipe smoking, but had to give it up. I could never find a good tobacco, that didn't burn hot, and make my mouth burn.
I could never get into cigs, the smell made me sick. Now a good cigar, is a thing to behold.
Just smoke a few bowls of straight Latakia real fast. That might cure you of the habbit.
Oh man...I love pipes. What a damned shame all the fun stuff is so bad for you.

Pipe smoking and collecting is almost as addictive as guns. I've smoked pipe for the past 15 years and love it. I'm also a reformed cigarette smoker. My favorite every day blend is Haddo's Delight blended by G.L. Pease. GLP has some great bends out there including English which I seem to prefer in the colder months. Pick up a few moderately priced pipes and try it out. The pipe itself makes a world of difference in smoking pleasure. Remember it's controlled combustion and you don't want a hot fire. I would look into Peterson and Savinelli as good starter pipes. Good luck and stay away from the drugstore blends.

Seemed to suit Sherlock Holmes. And as we all know, he kept his pipe tobacco in ________.
:wavey:
NB: an avid consumer of Holmes, I have yet to read in any publication that he smoked a Calabash pipe. It was generally referred to as 'an old briar.'

Always enjoyed my MacBaren's Latakia Blend, but the folks around me didn't care for the aroma at all.
A tool to tamp the tobacco with a knife blade and blunt spike is a nice accessory. A cedar humidor. A sleeve for pipe cleaners and pouch for tobacco on the go are useful.
All these things I have and no longer use. Pity.

I smoke a lot of different blends, but my goto is definitely Dunhill Nightcap. If you haven't tried it yet, you should.

Not as bad.
but as usual, done in moderation makes a big difference, as with anything.

I hesitate to contribute to your delinquency, but http://www.pipes.org/
I smoke a pipe while fishing on the boat by myself. Very relaxing. I have a Peterson silver mounted pipe that is my favorite of all, it doesn't smoke hot and is comfortable to keep in the mouth.

I'm 21 and smoke a briar pipe every so often...
I love it, have some flavored tobacco and I think I have picked up some bad habits that have damaged my pipe slightly.
But i am still learning...it's so hard though to be out in the open and smoking because the window sprays the tobacco and a gust of wind will put it out. Not to mention my Zippo pipe lighter NEVER works!!

Stay away from drug store blends and most cigar store "house" blends. Unless the owner is a pipe smoker the stuff they generally sell is cheap stuff that will burn your tongue abd turn you off to pipes.
Also get a pipe smoking book or research the web on how to smoke a pipe. Many will agree you need learn to pack it right, a charring light, relight and then puff gently, and not too often to keep the tobacco "cool"- this helps gaurd against tongue bite, smoking "wet" and charring the bowl. Its nothing difficult to master, but with practice/time and trying differnent good tobacco you'll get a lot out of it.

Smoke them like most people do cigarettes and they'll kill you faster. But, most people who smoke pipes, smoke one, maybe two bowls a day. Unless you smoke cheap cigars, the cost will quickly regulate how much you smoke. I had a friend who loved cigars. The cheapest brand he could abide was $10 per cigar. Try smoking 20 of those a day. He couldn't afford to smoke anymore than 3-4 a week.
I hate cigars. Can't stand them. I do like the smell of pipes, but smoking them does absolutely nothing for me. Tried it. Kept up with it maybe one time per week, then decided I didn't want to be bothered. In the back of my mind was the thought that, yes, this habit could cause oral cancer. Lung cancer isn't as prevalent in pipe smokers - largely b/c smokers don't inhale the smoke. Same thing goes for cigars, as I understand it. But smoking tobacco, either pipes or cigars, still releases carcinogens and there is a possibility that the smoke could cause oral cancer.

I have three of the Peterson "System" pipes that I smoke. I don't smoke very often at all---a few bowls per month. But I do enjoy those few.

I would be interested in purchasing the stuff you've listed, if you want to unload it. Shoot me a PM and let's haggle!
