View Full Version : longshot load in 40SW
Have anybody actually chrono any loads using the hodgon longshot powder and how close have they came with the claims on their web site?

I have loaded some 155 grainers with Longshot for my G27. I find that the short barrel of the 27 fails to take advantage of the slow burning rate of Longshot. However, velocities are definately higher than with other powders that I've tried(used.) Note that loads are below minimums listed by Hodgdon. They still kick like a mule though and the gun cycles fine.
8.2g.....1136fps; 8.4g.....1185fps; 8.6g.....1174fps; 8.6g.....1174fps;
8.8g.....1218fps; 9.0g.....1225fps;
9.2, 9.4g....1227fps....
The 9 gr load had the lowest standard deviation and should be the most accurate when I get around to retesting for accuracy. Still 155gr bullet from a G27 at 1225 fps is impressive. If I determine the worthyness of this load, I still must try it in practical shooting.
Hope this helps...
Thanks for the update. I myself have been loading 6.5 and 7.0 gr of longshot behind a 180gr montana gold and the loads just feels very soft, no flash, and I was curious as to if the velocities that where listed on the website where truely obtainable. I might load up some 155gr XTP and see how they feel using what you and the website has posted. I was surprise that this powder is about the cleanist powder that I have used in the 40S&W G23 and steyr M40.
Hodgon make some good stuff!
(btw) In my G20 this powder is very accurate. I'm talking with 8.8 and 9.0gr of this stuff behind a 180gr FMj I'm getting 1" to 2" groups @ 25yrds off hand. Once again recoil seems much softer and almost no muzzle flash.
EUPHER49's research and presentation is most helpfull.
Have you chrono'd bullet weights between 135gr and 180gr?

ryucasta,
When are you gonna chime in and help a fellow Norte Cuban with your favorite subject ??? :cool:
I don't need any help, my question was pretty much answer'd 3-4 months ago.;)
I'm surprise this thread was re-brought up.
