cleaning my RRA the other day, i completely took it apart. the problem i have though is when i went to put it back together, i wasnt sure how it is supposed to go. i took the bolt assembly out of the carrier, but didnt pay attention to where the extractor sat when it was inserted in the bolt carrier. (since it can be put in correctly, and upside down) im not sure which way to put it back together. i guess the worst thing that can happen is i will have a FTE on the first shot. thanks.
The outside of the bolt carrier has serrations on it for the forward assist. That is the side of the rifle that the ejection port is on. The extractor holds the rim of the case while the ejector pushes the case out of the ejection port. Hence ejector is opposite side from serrations and extractor is same side.

Kind of an ass arent ya? Good luck figuring out how a rifle works.
with the gaskey at 12o clock and facing away from you, the extractor must be at 2oclock. It has to coincide with the ejection port

No it can not.

I am sick, tired and a little concerned about some of the posts I read. People say stuff like, "why do I have a plastic top part Ar-15? It says Bushmaster I thought that they were made of aluminum?" I must stop with examples in this rant before I get out of hand. I just can not see my self spending hundreds of dollars on anything, let alone a firearm, without doing at least some research. And it is so obvious from a lot of postings that many do not investigate a product before spending money on it. It is not helping the 2nd amendment cause, this uneducated method of gun acquisition. And for CHRIST'S SAKE, PROOFREAD YOUR POSTS!

Try this. Insert the bolt into the carrier and get the bolt cam pin. Now rotate the bolt to where you can see the hole. Make sure that the extractor is facing toward the side of the carrier with the serrations. Insert the cam pin, pull the bolt forward and insert the firing pin. Lastly, insert the firing pin retaining pin.

I used to have a problem getting the cam pin in even though the holes were aligned but I just filed it down a little.....seem to get a few more FTE's than I used to though.:tongueout:
Seriously, I've owned an AR for two weeks now and even I knew that. I've been reading everything I could find about AR's for months before I made the decision to buy....and the day I brought it home I was already well versed on field stripping/lubing do's and don'ts.

On a properly made bolt you can only insert the cam bolt the right way, it is milled to prevent you from putting it in backwards. From what I have read that was one of the pre-production improvement in the 60s because the first test guns could have the the pin inserted on the wrong side causing the weapon to attempt to eject into the reciever instead of out.

no not really. just saying that you lost me in your description.
i just took my ar back apart, and YES you can insert it upside down and the pin will still go in. so i think my question is valid.
for HCRoadie, you dont know me from jack. if you have a question and this is the place to ask it. if you dont like my question, dont reply to it. the people that i think ask stupid question, i ignore their post. i dont get on here and say they are idiots, because i dont know them. how do you know that i didnt do research before i bought my AR?
as for the people that answered my question, thanks.
Your bolt is not to specs, one can only wonder what else may be wrong with it or how much before a to "to specs" bolt it will fail.

Greetings-
That issue isn't common, but not unheard of. Seen previously in the offerings of lesser makers. The first I've heard of it in a RRA though.
Would you be able to post some pics of your BCG?

Hi! Just a little rule of thumb, place the Bolt Carrier with the rear end facing you, oriented as in when you're aiming the rifle. Now, put in the bolt. THE EXTRACTOR SHOULD ALWAYS BE AT THE RIGHT. Then put in the bolt cam, there you go. Or with the bolt carrier facing right, put in the bolt, the extractor should face you. Bolt carrier facing you? The extractor should be at the LEFT between 10 and 11'clock. Take it from someone who almost put in the cam with the extractor at the LEFT side lately (it was late and I was sleepy).:embarassed:
Stickman's pic says everything.
Go easy guys. It is apparent that he/she is young and new due to the lack of capitalizion at the begining of sentenses. Correct grammatical structuring and punctuation are a key to the old school and the new, the future leaders of our country and the workers.
Place the extractor on the same side as the ejection port as the others have said before.

By the way, re Stickman's pic, how do you manage to scrape off the accumulated brass residue on the bolt face? On my Glock, it wipes right off with a patch moistened with bore cleaner, but with my AR bolt there will always be some patches of brass remaining on the bolt face despite my best efforts with the most potent bore cleaner I have. Wish I could get mine just as clean as Stickman's.
