Gentlemen:
My apologies for not searching first if this has already been covered, but is it dangerous to shoot military 5.56 ammo in a Colt Hbar AR-15? I have a '94 rifle like this and I noticed that unlike my Eagle Arms AR, it lists ".223" as the caliber on the side of the receiver and not 5.56mm.
I haven't shot much of anything through the rifle but was worried that the higher pressure military stuff might cause damage or be dangerous. Is this the case or are the Colt rifles able to handle both effectively?
Any responses would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Receiver is irrelevant. Check the barrel. I am betting it is 5.56, but makes sure the barrel says it is.
It may say something like "CMP 5.56 NATO 1/7 H-BAR"

I was wondering about that also. My colt says .223 on the lower and 5.56 on the barrel. I've only shot .223 from it since I thought only .223 could be shot.

if you re-read his statement, he says the barrel is 5.56......which means the barrel is chambered for that and does not matter what the lower is marked. I have lowers marked "Multi", 223, 5.56, 9mm........
but, all qaulity manufacturers make sure there barrels are market for the chamber/caliber for liability reasons......lowers are genericly marked for ATF paperwork.......

Thanks for the replies. I'll just need to keep an eye out for 5.56 ammo. Might just keep a few mags full of it for whenever I might need it.
