Two letters from the opinion page of the News and Observer in Raleigh, NC

A month of violence

With otherwise positive headwinds blowing throughout the nation, it seems like an unusually bloody February.

FEB. 2: A gunman kills five people in a Chicago store robbery.
FEB. 3: A gunman kills three people after an argument in a Largo, Md., restaurant.
FEB. 7: An enraged citizen shoots and kills five people at a city council meeting in Kirkwood, Mo.
FEB. 7: A gunman kills a Los Angeles police officer and kills three family members in his home.
FEB. 8: A student with a gun kills two fellow students and then herself in a classroom of a Baton Rouge, La., vocational college.
FEB. 14: A student with three guns goes on a shooting rampage at Northern Illinois University in Chicago, killing six.

A gun's proper use

In response to the Feb. 22 letter regarding gun violence, I submit the following using almost the same dates the writer did.

FEB. 1: Four Las Vegas residents held two invaders at bay with shotguns when the men attempted to assault and rape the females in the house.
FEB. 4: A would-be Philadelphia robber was arrested when police followed his trail of blood after he was shot by the owner of the store.
FEB. 7: A Houston man shot and killed a robber who approached him in a grocery store parking lot and demanded money at gun-point.
FEB. 7: A Houston office supply business owner shot and killed a burglar who was attempting to break into the closed store at midnight.
FEB. 8: In Jackson, Miss., a store clerk closing for the night shot a robber who confronted him at the clerk's car.
FEB. 14: A Dallas man shot one of three burglars attempting to rob his house when he surprised them in the act. The injured burglar was later arrested at the local hospital.
For every instance the writer can produce highlighting a gun's improper use, I can produce an example showing the proper use of firearms.

Dinky, the pro-gun writer goes to church where I do. I shook his hand today and thanked him for standing up for us gun owners. Joe
