Are there any GTers in the NoVa area into IDPA? I'm fairly new to shooting and am getting a little bored with shooting paper. I'd also like to learn some practical shooting. I've been to the IDPA website and it sounds interesting. Is it challanging? Difficult? Are the other competitors easy to get along with? Would I be able to hang out and watch a few times before deciding on competing? Just curious.

It's easy. Call NRA headquarters for the date of the next IDPA class session.

In what county do you reside and how far are you willing to travel?

I know of one where the match is held bi-weekly on Wednesday evenings.

JTodd:
Check with NRA for the IDPA class and then a qualifier. They have an IDPA match once a month there (Tues. PM), but good luck getting in...they're ALWAYS having 200 folks fighting to get into about 48 slots.
We shoot regularly at Sanner's Lake over in MD. twice a month (Sunday AM) and Friday @4 PM once a month. It's outdoors, and GREAT people...about a 2hr drive from Fairfax...very near Pautuxet NAS.
I recommend it highly.
They have a qualifier every two months.
Also, the last Sunday of each month @ Cavalier Rod and Gun Club, north of Richmond...also great folks.

Send me an e-mail and I'll get you the website addresses for both places...It looks like we're meeting about 4-5 new folks in NOVA that are now interested in IDPA...maybe we can put a group together???;a ;a ;a

I just re-read your message...

ALL the folks we met at IDPA matches have been the BEST people in the whole world, very welcoming and friendly. ALL the folks have been super and most helpful to our shooting.
At Sanner's Lake they have many "watchers" all the time, they show you the COF, explain things and help you with your shooting, even if you don't participate.
There is never an intimidation factor.
I've never met an IDPA person I didn't like.
Check it out - you'll love it.

We first learned IDPA at the NRA headquarters...if you don't want to travel far, start with them. They do a wonderful "Introduction to IDPA" class.

OK, USPSA shooter coming in here.........

Ok, I gotta put a vote in for USPSA. There are more USPSA clubs in the NOVA area then there are IDPA clubs. I am always at the North Mountain match . Its web page can be found at
North Mountain Practical Shooters (http://members.citynet.net/northmountaindragon/) Come out on the 30th, it is a Classifier match.
