I'm planning a lightweight KISS build and want to know if going with an A1 upper over an A2 will really save that much weight. They seem to be hard to find and nobody makes one with the barrel style I want.

View Full Version : Lightweight KISS build. A1 or A2? AFshooter 02-26-2008, 13:40 I'm planning a lightweight KISS build and want to know if going with an A1 upper over an A2 will really save that much weight. You will save weight. Not a massive amount but it does add up. RMTactical 02-26-2008, 14:43 Personally I would go with a flat top and a fixed rear sight mounted. It is still KISS, but leaves room for changes later on down the road. I like having options. That said, something like this would be perfect. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/mwirig79/kiss_ar.jpg bukn77 02-26-2008, 15:38 It cant get more "KISS" than that RM. USMC79to83 02-26-2008, 21:47 Personally I would go with a flat top and a fixed rear sight mounted. Onmilo 02-26-2008, 22:19 Flat top upper with a simple back up iron sight and a superlight 16" barrel on a Cav-Arms polymer lower would probably make up the lightest weight AR rifle. PlasticGuy 02-27-2008, 12:26 For my lightweight AR-15, I opted for a lower with an a1 stock. The barrel is a 16" pencil style with a 1:7" twist. The front sight is a fixed a2, and the upper reciever is an a3 with PRi flip up. That rifle is simple and very light, while still allowing me to shoot heavy match bullets and use any current issue optics. Sorry, but I haven't taken any pics yet. nsabjg 02-27-2008, 15:05 I would build with an A1 upper but not a A1 barrel{1 in 12} I would use a 1 in 8 or 1 in 7 in the build. good luck. jrs93accord 02-27-2008, 16:36 This is my K.I.S.S. build. A Retro A1 with USGI upper, USGI A1 buttstock, USGI A1 pistol grip, USGI OD nylon M1 rifle sling, DPMS lower and LPK, and a M16 BCG. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/jamesrea_2006/DSC00397.jpg halfmoonclip 02-28-2008, 18:38 While I personally prefer the A1 sights, the A2s don't add enough weight to feel the difference. A pencil barrel is more critical to your plan. Just out of curiosity what does a Cav arms polmer lower generally sell for? AFshooter 02-28-2008, 19:14 Thanks to the posters who actually answered my question. I just got an email from a supplier of mine. His prices on Cav Arms are $85 for stripped and $150 for complete poly lowers. My plans for the build include a light mid-length barrel from CMMG. Does anyone know of a good source for inexpensive A1/A2 uppers? fourrobert13 02-28-2008, 21:40 I prefer the A2 over the A1. I can't see there being that much difference in weight, maybe an ounce or two. IRRC, the A2 allowes for more sight adjustment, but don't quote me on that. Here is a pic of my KISS. Check out www.del-ton.com for your upper. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g229/fourrobert13/Picture613.jpg USMC79to83 02-29-2008, 08:09 Thanks to the posters who actually answered my question. Does anyone know of a good source for inexpensive A1/A2 uppers? As long as you're buying the Bbl from CMMG, did you consider getting the whole upper from them? The list the 16" Lightweight with A2 for $575 complete with BCG. When faced with buying the tools and finding the time, or buying a complete upper, I chose complete. Your situation may be different... CMMG has a stripped A2 upper receiver for $140 / RRA lists them at $110 - Both list a complete A2 receiver at $175. Stag, Delton or Model 1 may be less. Make the upper a Carbon-15 and you're there. I've got a Carbon-15 upper with BUIS and the Superlight 16" barrel and I'm looking for a good deal on a Cav-Arms lower. Onmilo 02-29-2008, 09:51 Cav-Arms lowers sell for about a hundred bucks through Brownells.http://www.brownells.com Since Cav-Arms was raided by the FEDS this week I am not sure if these lowers will be around any longer or even if Brownells can still sell them. Bummer but things like this happen. Bummer but things like this happen. Bummer! Do you know what the cause for the raid was? If I can't find a Cav-Arms, I can always just stick with a standard lower and the Ace stock which is very light. Here it is before I got the BUIS: http://lh6.google.com/AutoXdriver/R54c8GDvfKI/AAAAAAAAAhw/dVP535FWBec/s400/65-1024.jpg vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
