How old does a gun have to be to not be a gun? Pre-1898?
If you found a shotgun or rifle made before 1898, lopped it off to less than legal length, is it a SBS, SBR, or is it still not a gun?

I think a gun made before 1898 is still a gun it just doesn't have to be transferred through an FFL for state to state transactions.

I have a few old firearms pre-serial number. They're still guns and you can't just "do whatever" to them.

Pre-Serial number and pre-1898 are NOT the same thing.
I have a 22Hornet that is Pre-serial #. It is not Pre-1898. The rules are not the same.
As far as contacting the ATF, I prefer not to poke a sleeping bear unless I have to. Based on other ATF rulings, they will interperate it however it best suits them at the time. Remember your shoe string is a machine gun.
