I have never owned a Black Rifle. Looking forward to getting one and this site has given me a lot of information. But I have some ?s

Should I spend more for a rifle with a gas piston upper. Is it worth it.

Which brand is the best for around $1100.

That depends on what the conditions that you will be using it in are and what your priorities are. A gas piston upper will tend to make your AR run alot cleaner with a slight reduction in accuracy. The biggest problem is that its still early enough if the life of this technology that there is still some question as to the reliability. If a piston gets bent how much is it going to cost to replace? The biggest advantage to this technology is that it will keep the dirty exhaust gasses away from your bolt.

Odds are if you ask 10 different people this you will get 10 different answers. Personally I like to build my own, but thats mainly because I enjoy the process. The biggest question that needs to be addressed before we can give you much advice is what do you intend to do with the rifle? Once you narrow down the style of AR you want then you can start comparing manufacturers.

I recommend going over to www.ar15.com and browse around. You will find a wealth of info there. We cannot tell you what you should buy, but we can point you in a direction to educate yourself about the AR and various issues associated with them. Inever asked anyone what I should buy. I did ask about specific products (accessories) and some personal feedback on them. I was able to do my own research just reading the various posts and by searching the internet.

I found some custom built ones RRA at Guns of america .com for 695. Are these guys good dealers.
Obviously, I should build one like Iowa Hick Said.

I look to hunt with it, and want optics of some sort.

I want accuracy for Deer Hunting, and I can clean my weapon, so I will Stay away from the gas piston. Thanks
I own many deer rifles, .257 wetherby, 7mm Rem Mag etc. but I wanted to use nice black gun next year.
I want to build one like you Iowa, so where do I start.

If you want to build your own I would start with a good quality lower. Then you need a LPK kit and a stock(collapsible or fixed). Next you will need a upper. Do you want a carbine, midlength, or full. You also need to decide on barrel length, rate of twist, and type(pencil, standard, bull, chromoly, chrome-lined , stainless steel.

LMT would be my choice.

If you are looking at a Black Rifle for deer, you might want to carefully consider what caliber you want. While it is entirely possible to kill a deer with a .223, it tends to be a hair on the small side. Its also not legal to use on deer in many state. Here in Iowa you must use at least a .24 caliber rifle, so I chose a 6.8 SPC.

No matter which caliber you go with you can start building your lower. Check out AR15.com they have some pretty detailed instructions for assembling AR's, which was a great help for me when I built mine.
