View Full Version : So, I'm guessing its not supposed to move?

Just bought a used DPMS LRT-SASS and the barrel will move slightly if I push on it.
I took it out to the range today and my groups were less than stellar. The handguard is also kinda loose. You can move that with your hands also.
Is this stuff supposed to be tighter? I think its all free floated, but I didn't expect it to be loose.
Any help?

You might want to put a barrel wrench on it and see if its just a loose barrel nut. I think the recommended torque is 80 ft-lbs, but don't quote me on that.

...except, if it IS a loose barrel nut, and it uses the same barrel attachment and gas system as a stock AR, you'll have to remove the gas tube before attempting to turn the nut.
Loose barrel and free float tube is probably a bad thing. Call company and check with them, see if they will do anything for a second owner. If they are unwilling to help, then I'd look into having another AR-qualified gunsmith crank on it as needed.

To answer the immediate question - no, the barrel is not supposed to move. It is supposed to be locked in tightly to the upper receiver. Handguard movement is okay, but freefloat tube movement is not. A small amount of play between the upper and lower receivers is okay, but not desireable.

35-80 ft/lbs. I usually have my torque wrench set to 50 ft/lbs

I usually have my torque wrench set to 50 ft/lbsJust curious (if it's not considered a company secret ;)); do you tighten, loosen, tighten, loosen, tighten/torque to minimum, then tighten until you get a clear barrel nut groove for the gas tube? If not, would you mind saying what your general procedure is (PM if you'd like)?
Thanks for your time.

You should have NO movement of the barrel or free floating rail... THAT IS BAD!!!

It's on its way to DPMS as we speak. I thank God I didn't have an injury or worse firing this gun. Hopefully they'll get it back to spec and it will be rock solid.

Once you get it back, you will never want to put it down.

I believe you. The leupold mark 4 really helps to sweeten the package.
