I was planning on buying a S&W 638 and adding some lasergrips to it, sometime this year. However, a deal came by that I wasn't able to pass up. So now I am a proud owner of a S&W 642 with 'factory' CT lasergrips. A friend of my cousin's had bought it for his wife, but she didn't care for it and he was looking to sell it. The gun is LNIB. Anyhow, I am ready to order my Mika pocket holster tonight and I was going to pick up a HKS speedloader as well. Can anyone tell me what Speedloader I need? The websites I have found don't list the 642. I think it is the 36-A Speedloader. Thanks!--Rob

Congratulations. As far as the 638, I think you got the better gun. And Crimson Trace grips are the hot ticket for a J frame snubbie. I have them on my 340 PD. You might consider the speed strips instead of the speed loaders. They pocket much easier.

Not only that, but I can actually reload J's as fast (or faster) with the strips. For some reason, the speedloaders are super quick for me in K-frames (I think it has to do with the K's bigger cylinder giving my hand more clearance from the frame), but in the J-frames they slow me down.

I started using strips because they could back up my 5 and 6 shooters when I carried both, but I quickly found it was faster in the baby 38. With speedloaders at $8-10/each, and the strips $5-8 for a 2-pack, it's cheap enough to try both.

Congrats on the gun. Enjoy!!

When I carried my 649 I carried a pair of speedstrips in the weak side pocket.

If I was carrying my G30 and a spare mag or two and had the 649, one speedstrip would live somewhere on me just in case. Situation depending, if the 649 was my primary and I could get away with it, 2 speed strips in the weak side pocket and an HKS speedloader somewhere else on or off body.

Funny, I always carry my reloads (strips or speed loader) in my strong side pocket. I use the hold in the weak hand, reload with the strong hand method (I'm definitely no JM). I should probably keep one in each side...just gotta figure out what to do with the keys...

I agree with the speed strips. I keep 2. 1 in each back pocket and my snubbie in my front pocket. At night I keep it on the night stand and a speed loader next 2 it. I used to carry the loader but it was really bulky in my pocket. I feel more than safe with 5 shots. having 12 more in my pockets is great though!
